But they were attempting to govern as a theocracy, weren’t they? I know the 1st century Christians sold their goods, and “they held everything in common”, but that was because many of them were in hiding. Even so, he who won’t work, doesn’t eat, was the rule there.

That was the first church still in Jerusalem, and yes many were in hiding but not all. They were being hunted and needed help, the other churches outside of Jerusalem were being asked to help what they could, but the other churches outside were not “they held everything in common”. And within a few years time Jerusalem (and that first church) were no more. (70 AD)
