Washington (AP) — Donald Trump wants more than acquittal. He wants vindication.
With impeachment by the House appearing certain, the president has made clear that he views the next step, a trial in the GOP-controlled Senate, as his focus. The president sees the senators not just as a jury deciding his fate, but as partners in a campaign to discredit and punish his Democratic opponents. His Senate allies aren't so sure that's a good idea.
In recent weeks, Trump has devised a wish list of witnesses for the Senate trial, relishing the opportunity for his lawyers to finally cross-examine his accusers and argue the case that his actions toward Ukraine, including the July 25 call when he asked for a favor, were “perfect.”
Trump and his allies have been building up the likely Senate trial, an effort to delegitimize the Democratic-controlled House’s impeachment process by contrast. In the Senate, the Trump team has argued, the president would get the opportunity to challenge witnesses and call some of his own, such as House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, the still-anonymous intelligence community whistleblower, or even Joe Biden and Hunter Biden.
He sees that as a chance to embarrass Democrats, including the former vice president and 2020 Democratic rival, and use the friendlier ground to portray himself as the victim of a partisan crusade.
“It is pretty clear the president wants a trial,” says Hogan Gidley, the principal deputy White House press secretary. “The president is eager to get his story out.”

And why are Republican Senators nay-saying a complete smashing of the Democrat's universe?
Some Republican Senators have their own dirty laundry they want to keep hidden.
Because many of them are part & parcel of the Dem universe...?

Without a trial, the Dems get their message out without any challenges, and will allow them to blame the Senate for the impeachment failure and give them a way out along with a messaging weapon for 2020.
mcconnell was on Hanity and said there is no distance between senate repubs and the president’s counsel. mcconnel said he would follow Trump’s counsel lead. Not that I believe him.
Could have both. Dismiss it on grounds that the impeachment allegations don’t constitute a crime and give them 30 days to amend. We can keep it going until they allege something that withstands dismissal, and everytime they amend they will be digging a deeper hole for themselves. In the end we will vote it down.
I say let him have it. Roast the Democrats, conduct the vote, prove there aren't the votes in the Senate (and likely some Democrat Senators will NOT vote to convict) and let's get it over with.
Whether it takes a week or two weeks is irrelevant.
The President wants his day and I support my President wanting his day in court.

I agree with you. This fiasco must be fully aired at the Senate trial. If Trump wants a full trial, McConnell said he will take his cues from Trump.
The Senate must immediately send these articles back to the House. No vote necessary. The hearings in the House were done improperly and therefore are unconstitutional. The Senate cannot hold inquiries or even vote one way or another.
Because the more Trump looks into the swamp, the more Republican rats he will be sweeping out of office, Linda Graham being one of many! Mitch the Bitch probably is another one. That ps why he wants it swept under the rug. If that happens, he allows impeachment to be never ending. Personally he should tell Mitch that he (Trump) is over the Republican Party, and if he doesn’t go through with the trial ad end this once and for all, he ad the rest of the encombants can kiss any fund raising money good bye, and he will crest a 3rd party, the American party to challenge them! After what happened tonight in Britain, Mitch will fold like a deck chair.

I’ve been watching the house impeachment hearing all day today and here’s a thing you might find troubling...
In the articles that the rats are drafting, there is a clause in their that says basically, that Trump cannot hold public office again.
Republicans argued against it. Jordan found it and led the charge for hours to amend the articles, however, the rats voted it down to strike the clause.
These rats are really disgusting. I’ve learned so much about how vile these people are. Seems that every other word they speak is a nasty lie.
I really hate these people.

The only freaking good we can get from an impeachment is a Senate trial that will exonerate Trump and utterly destroy the dems.

I’m trying to be totally objective here.
I can see powerful arguments for either approach.
Ultimately, the power is with the people and their votes. We have the power to vote the RATs out of office — along with the worst of the GOPe — and make sure they never come near a position of power again in our lifetimes.
Unfortunately, for every patriot, there seems to be at least one emotion-driven, low-information voter. And yes, I’m looking at you, American women — although I certainly hold conservative women in high esteem, just as I do conservative ethnic minorities.
Then do it again.
Having seen Dershowitz in action, there’s no one better.
