Mitch McConnell threatens to CANCEL Donald Trump's Senate trial if 'scared' Nancy Pelosi does not hand over 'slapdash' articles of impeachment - as Speaker slams him as a 'ROGUE leader' and president gloats he will be cleared by 'default'

Mitch McConnell on Thursday threatened to cancel Donald Trump's impeachment trial in the Senate if 'scared' Nancy Pelosi doesn't send over the formal articles of impeachment against the president.

The speaker and the Senate Republican leader went to war over the next steps in the impeachment process as Pelosi slammed McConnell as a 'rogue leader' - and he blasted her articles as 'slapdash' and 'unfair.'

The dispute exploded into the open the morning after Democrats voted to impeach Trump, with the president bragging he was going to win the whole thing by 'default.'

'If the Do Nothing Democrats decide, in their great wisdom, not to show up, they would lose by Default!,' Trump argued on Twitter of his upcoming Senate trial, which is now in doubt.

Pelosi has to 'transmit' the articles of impeachment and appoint 'managers' to prosecute the president - but offered no timeline on when she would do that, saying she wanted to see the Senate's plan for a 'fair trial,' effectively holding the articles over McConnell and Trump's heads.

McConnell, who previously said he wanted to hold the trial in January, responded: 'It's beyond me how the Speaker and Democratic Leader in the Senate think withholding the articles of impeachment and not sending them over gives them leverage.

'Frankly, I'm not anxious to have the trial. If she thinks her case is so weak she doesn't want to send it over, throw me into that briar patch.'

IIRC, those were simple letters of request, not subpoenas. I believe Nanny said they didn’t want to wait while things wound through the court. Bolton even said he would respond to an actual subpoena, were they to issue one that the courts enforced.

LOL....Nonsense!

It may be that you are easily controlled, but President Trump can’t be controlled with this BS.

Those procedures were voted on & adopted in 1986. If Mitch gets ticked enough he can vote of new procedures just as Nancy & Schiff made up procedures & rules as they went along.

“So I could see him saying that at the beginiing and then waiving the trial.”

actually, Lindsey Graham stated this evening on FNC after Graham met with President Trump today that President Trump does not want a dismissal: President Trump wants a trial and then a vote for actual acquittal because a dismissal won’t acquit him ...

of course, there won’t BE a trial at all unless/until Pelosi transmits the articles of impeachment to the Senate, and some Constitutional scholars believe that an impeachment hasn’t actually occurred unless and until said articles are transmitted to the Senate ...

Partner, the House of Representatives can not dictate what the Senate can do or can not do. It is written in the Constitution. They are both separate entities.

Senator McConnell can not let any of the folks in the House come over to the Senate and dictate what they must do or can not do, period.

McConnell must throw away the Impeachment charges and there is no trial of impeachment in the Senate if they do have the charges on President Trump.

“This is not a criminal prosecution.”

The constitution uses the terms “High Crimes and misdemeanors” as the LEGAL definition of an impeachable offense.

A president must be guilty of a serious CRIME to be impeached. Not guilty of being disliked by congress. So yes, it is a criminal trial and the 6th amendment would, I think, apply.

Wow have you ever let yourself be controlled by dem and media talking points.

Outing yourself as an anti-Trump asset of the left is a good move here at FR.

Your opinions ignore the facts.

From your link:
Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution provides that the President

may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in case of disagreement between them, with respect to the time of adjournment, he may adjourn them to such time as he shall think proper

So if Trump adjourns the Senate, does that make him able to appoint Judges etc?

That’s a very good question. If the president has the constitutional authority to adjourn the House, he should do so. Until such time Nancy Pelosi is ready to play nice. Is ready to deliver the articles to the Senate as she should.

I noticed you never answered the questions:
Where are the fact finding hearings in the senate? Will mcconnell put the senate in recess so Trump can make recess appointments? I think not.

The senate is bot judge and jury and jury nullification is legal and older than the Republic - used by the colonists to free those falsely accused by the crown.

“After the elections the impeachment goes away.”

Maybe in your mind it goes away. Prior to this impeachment President Nixon was much more evil (to the left) than Hitler or Stalin, as every chance they got they brought it up (even though Nixon resigned before he could be impeached).

Trump is much more evil in the mind of the leftists than Nixon. Thus Trump’s impeachment will be mixed with talking points for decades to come. To the left it is not relevant that it may never go to trial or if he is acquitted.
