Former national security adviser John Bolton is questioning whether the Trump administration "really means it" when the president and other officials promise to denuclearize North Korea.
Speaking with Axios in an interview published Sunday, Bolton accused President Trump of bluffing on the vow to rid the hermit nation of nuclear weapons, saying the White House "would be pursuing a different course" if the pledge were true.
"The idea that we are somehow exerting maximum pressure on North Korea is just unfortunately not true," he said, calling the Trump administration's assertion that the country cannot have nukes a "rhetorical policy."
If North Korea follows through on it's promised "Christmas gift" for the United States, which some believe is a sign that the country could resume long-distance missile tests, Bolton believes the White House should do something "that would be very unusual."
Inside the Magazine: December 17 According to him, administration officials should admit they were wrong and say, "We've tried. The policy's failed. We're going to go back now and

Gee, I wonder why President Trump fired this guy.
original interview:
Exclusive: John Bolton hits Trump for bluffing on North Korea nukes
Bolton seeks to undermine Trump on North Korea by telling what he promotes as the truth of the situation.
Trump is trying to avoid having to vaporize a large part of North Korea.
When Bolton weakens Trump’s hands, he weakens our national defense and endangers the country.
Talk about a real patriot.
Bolton is an absolutely sick individual.
He doesn’t get it. Maybe things will work. Maybe they won’t. But things take time and they were a lot worse with past presidents. Bolton’s way doesn’t work. Trust the process.
He better not show his face at CPAC.
I have lost all respect for this guy who can’t seem to keep his mouth shut. It has to all be about him.
Bolton is proving to be a CLASSLESS A@@HOLE!
John Bolton, the darling of the crowd that was howling for McMaster to be fired. I bet no one can name Trump’s current National Security Adviser.
This ahole is one reason it hasn’t happened yet.
It’s not rocket science: NK will denuclearize upon (1) peace treaty ending the Korean War & (2) we will withdraw our military forces from the Korean peninsula.
Bolton has, or had, lots of fans here. He’s a disaster.
LOL yeah, pretty much. Probably hasn’t ever been a conflict this guy wasn’t in favor of.
If it was up to him, we’d probably have an army twice as large to handle hot conflicts in almost every country in the world.
What an @sshole this guy is.
There are two John Boltons. This version is why I’m glad he wasn’t called to testify during that Impeachment farce.
He runs hot & cold.
Kim is going to get China a neighborhood full of nukes: in SK, Japan, Australia...
Good God, we need to redefine laws for treason and sedition and require strict non disclosure contracts for appointed government officials for when they leave their positions when fired.
I wouldn’t put it past Trump to fire Bolton knowing he would spout this crap, then use it to convince Lil’ Kim to denuclearize.
That’s wishful thinking, as Bolton is correct in the particular that we are not exerting “maximum pressure” — but he is wrong in the general that such pressure would work.
So back to theory no. 1: Trump’s negotiation tactics have the best chance of producing desired outcomes, and Bolton’s mouthing off only enhances Trump’s negotiation stance.
