I recently downsized into an over-55 community and still pay a fair amount of property tax (over $10,000 a year). But yes, to your point, I have no children to send to school so the town is making out very well with my contributions!

Those over 55 communities are sprouting up all over the NYC metro area - like mushrooms - as Baby Boomers start to retire in force.

Strange; unless it is an exclusive community, why are the taxes so high? Our school taxes are about 1/3 of our total property taxes here in NJ; are you in NY?

I think towns see them as a way to keep the stability of older people in the area with low offsetting costs; is the $10,000 low for the area (compared to single-family homes, for example)?
