A shooter at a church in White Settlement, Texas, was taken down by parishioners with guns seconds after he began firing Sunday.
Those parishioners, who were also volunteer members of the church's security team, are able to carry guns into church due to a law passed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in response to another deadly church shooting that took the lives of 26 people in 2017.
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick referred to the law during a Sunday night press conference, saying that it was passed following the deadly shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. It took effect in September, Patrick said.
Senate Bill 535 took effect in September and clarifies possession of firearms at places of worship. The bill allows licensed handgun owners to legally carry their weapons in churches, synagogues and other houses of worship.
"We have learned many times over that there is no such thing as a gun-free zone. Those with evil intentions will violate the law and carry out their heinous acts no matter what," state Sen. Donna Campbell, co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement when the bill was passed in September. "It makes no sense to disarm the good guys and leave law-abiding citizens defenseless where violent offenders break the law to do great harm."
Patrick also mentioned a second law that was recently passed that waives the fees charged to private institutions that have their own security teams. He lauded the heroic actions of those volunteer security members. "They were well trained, well trained. The heroism today is unparalleled. This team responded quickly and within six seconds the shooting was over," Patrick said. "Two of the parishioners who are volunteers on the security force drew their weapons and took out the killer immediately saving untold number of lives."

no comment from Joe Biden?
A factually correct article that is free of editorial comments...how did that slip through the CNN editors?
“no comment from Joe Biden?”
and still no mention of Joe Biden condemning the governor when he sign it
I expect the "correction" will not be buried, it will be a headline.
The MSM will focus on the town name instead.
No law made it legal to have guns in church. God gave us the right to defend ourselves.
Old “Shotgun” Joe still hasn’t mentioned that the bad guy should have just used the shotgun to shoot into the air. That would have chased all those parishioners out into the street.
His suggestion to use shotguns was heeded.
The guys would have got off only two shots anywhere.
He was packing only a sawed off shotgun. And they don’t make those with 8 round tubes.
Aguila Minishells. Turns the Mossberg 590 into a 9+1.
Laws don’t make things legal. Laws make things illegal. If there’s no law against it then it is legal.
I stand corrected.
Is this the weapon of the perp?
Don’t forget the man who tried to draw his pistol and was shot down , point blank , by the shooter. He bought time for the others , by distracting the gunman, allowing the others to draw , focus and fire. He died
They have 14 inch barrels, are 26" overall length, and are NOT designed to be fired from the shoulder.
That allows them to fall into the category of "firearm" and are legal without a tax stamp. (Of course, your own state laws also apply, and these are not allowed in all states.)
If you're interested, here's a description of how these "firearms" are legal without a tax stamp: https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2017/3/31/tested-mossberg-590-shockwave/
I my field work, I have come across most preachers being armed.
This includes Baptists.
Exactly
I thought any shotgun with a barrel less than 18in was illegal in the US.
“I thought any shotgun with a barrel less than 18in was illegal in the US.”
true enough, but their are numerous firearms classified as handguns that shoot shotgun shells ... .410 is one of the most popular calibers of such handguns:
