UK ban on US chlorinated chicken 'to continue after Brexit'

Chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-treated beef will be kept out of the UK under any trade deal with the US, the environment secretary has promised.

Theresa Villiers told the BBC the current European Union ban on the two foods will be carried over into UK legislation after Brexit. Until now the UK has been wavering on the issue.

But she told BBC Countryfile: “There are legal barriers to the imports and those are going to stay in place.”

Ms Villiers has previously talked of imposing tariffs on any future imports of US chicken and beef. But she’s been under great pressure from Britain’s farmers.

In the exclusive interview with the Countryfile programme, she said: “We will defend our national interests and our values, including our high standards of animal welfare."

I have lived in and traveled to Europe, Africa, South America and the Far East. American beef is far superior to all those countries with the lone exception of the very very expensive Wagyu/Kobe beef.
Chickens in this country are washed in a chlorine solution and then rinsed thoroughly with de-ionized water for health/safety reasons.
The occurrence of food poisoning here in the USA from poultry is a tiny fraction of what it is in all other countries.
That said, the glaring exception to this is US Pork. American Pork, after decades of breeding the fat(flavor) out our pigs has rendered our pork products tasteless.
The only pork we buy here in the USA is Boston Butt, Butt steaks, St. Louis ribs, and bacon. All else is tasteless trash.

we also eat chlorinated chicken her in the states. its part of the food cleaning process at our chicken processers. the idea is to prevent surface contamination when processing large amounts of poultry. this is one reason chicken is as cheap as it is in the United States. if we did not do this safe chicken would be expensive.

“American Pork, after decades of breeding the fat(flavor) out our pigs has rendered our pork products tasteless.” Agreed. I haven’t bought pork in months — not since I noticed every package of pork in my local grocery’s meat case was labeled “Injected with up to 15% of a solution . . . “ All the taste and marbling has been bred out of factory pork, so now they have to inject it with salt and sugar to give it a bit of flavor. And wasn’t the US’s largest pork producer bought by China several years ago?

Correct. Smithfield is now owned by a Chinese state-owned company. But, that description is redundant. ALL Chinese companies are Communist State owned.
Every penny we spend on Smithfield pork goes into the Communist Chinese coffers.

I started buying my bacon from a local butcher and immediately noticed that, unlike the big commercial brands, it doesn't shrink lengthwise when I cook it, nor does the lean part dry out and become hard to chew. I'm not sure why this is, but my guess is that they don't inject it full of water. But the best part is that they charge about $5.80 per pound, which is comparable to the "bargain" brands in the supermarket.

The bleach is not in the meat. It kills surface bacteria. In addition, bleach is very unstable once mixed in water, so it would break down into its component molecules after a day or so.

I seem to recall that we bleach produce, too, for the same reasons. Kill bacteria.

When you talk about American beef, do you mean grass-fed/organic?

Is our beef better because of the hormones or in spite of?

The Brits feed their chicken fish pieces. That is why their chicken tastes like fish.
