The Chinese market at the center of the deadly coronavirus outbreak sold live animals — including wolf pups, foxes, rats and peacocks — to eat, according to a new report.

The wild animals were among 112 items that were peddled at the Huanan Seafood Market in the central city of Wuhan, Agence France-Press reported.

Other wildlife sold at the market, which has since been shuttered, included crocodiles, giant salamanders, snakes, porcupines and camel meat.

They left out the bats

It’s enough to make your stomach turn.

A viral video has emerged online of a Chinese woman gobbling a bat, which “play a critical role” in transmitting the deadly coronavirus, with a second video also featuring an alleged bowl of bat soup.

The first gag-inducing clip features an unidentified woman at an undisclosed restaurant in the Wuhan province clutching what appears to be a fruit bat with chopsticks while nibbling its wing like chicken.

“Excuse me - waiter? There’s a bat in my soup!”

“Oh yes - we ran out of flies.”

Huanan Seafood Market

This market seems to have a strange definition of marine life...

Slightly OT, but I need a dose of comic relief:

To somewhat alter a headline I saw reprinted many years ago—

FReepers Upset Over Bat Eating Chinese

;-)

OTOH, I do believe there are some FReepers who’d be just fine with the more humorous (or gruesome?) reading of the phrase.

(The original, IIRC, was “Reader Upset Over Dog Eating Flipinos”. That one still cracks me up to the point of tears in my eyes. And I’m married happily (mostly) to a Filipina! She thinks it’s hilarious too.)

I’m so glad I live in the USA where we eat burgers, fries, steaks, pizza, burritos, BBQ, bacon and spaghetti and meatballs and a lot of other delicious food... not freakin’ BATS and RATS and SALAMANDERS. No wonder half the world wants to move here from their sh-thole countries.

When Nixon first visited China I watched a documentary on the country where they stated that the Chinese will eat anything with 4 legs except a table and anything from the water except a boat, so nothing has changed.

Of course this has nothing to do with the level 4 biolab in that city.

Clearly it’s the food at the exotic market

what? that old building over there? it’s an aspirin factory, wait, a child care center; wait, a post office. Yeah, that’s the ticket. A post office. Just a bunch of envelopes inside. Nothing to see folks.

The Chinese have been eating anything that wiggles for literally centuries.
They’ve only been fiddling with viral genetics for a few years...

Compare this to where the Feds chose to locate their lab. It may or may not (depending on your proximity) distress you to hear that the Federal HQ for studying infectious diseases is located in Bethesda, Maryland, one of the poshest cities in the country, literally a few miles outside DC city limits. I expect the Chinese lab is in Wuhan because they couldn’t make it any more backwater and still retain talent. The Chinese leadership wisely (from their perspective) chose to locate this lab thousands of miles away from their offices and homes in Beijing, which speaks well of their instincts for self-preservation.

These damn chinamen will eat anything. I had a friend that did a startup there.
The Chinese team took the American team out for "a night on the town".

First stop, something to eat. He said they showed up with live eel, still wiggling and chopped it up on the table. Everyone was instructed, dig in.
