A Santa Cruz-area MS-13 gang member pleaded guilty in court Friday.
According to the Department of Justice, Tomas Rivera (aka Profugo, aka Caballo, aka Jonas Portillo Escobar) pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit murder and extortion for his role as a Santa Cruz Salvatrucha Locos gang member.
Advertisement The Santa Cruz Salvatrucha Locos is an MS-13 subset operating in the Santa Cruz area.
Law enforcement officials said Rivera was second-in-command of the Santa Cruz gang. He was alleged to have used violence and murder to enforce MS-13 rules.
Chief Andrew Mills of the Santa Cruz Police Department said, “We are grateful to our federal partners for assisting Santa Cruz with taking a very violent criminal off our streets.”
Part of the plea agreement says that Rivera admitted to being "was a high-ranking participant in a criminal conspiracy perpetrating murder, extortion, and drug trafficking, and a member of the notorious transnational gang MS-13."
Seven other defendants pleaded guilty earlier for their roles in the Santa Cruz Salvatrucha Locos and six have been sentenced.
