I sat in my wonderful aisle seat at LAX, headed for Maui. A newlywed couple sat in the same row — the wife in the middle seat across the aisle and her husband next to me in the middle.

I thought I’d do a generous thing so they could sit together so volunteered to switch seats, cross the aisle and sit in the middle.

OMG! The woman next to me by the window had such horrid BO, I spent the 5-1/2-hour flight trying not to visibly gag.

That was a hard lesson to learn when it comes to doing good deeds. The icing on the cake was that the married kids were so sweet when they wanted to accommodated and the minute they got what they wanted they morphed into to snotty brats. Never again will I give up my aisle seat to be nice.

my sense of smell is always on high, unfortunately.
I just cover my mouth and nose if i am in public and am around stinky folks. I have no shame, and they have no soap.
and PS you can shower 2ce a day but if your clothes and undies are never washed, you still stink.

I ‘ll tell ya, what’s almost as bad as the funkateers. The folks, men and women, that douse themselves in 10 gallons of eau de stink cologne or perfume. Chemical warfare ! Some of these toxic clouds extend 10-15 feet , at least it provides some sort of warning. Choking noxious chemical vapor that leave you gasping for fresh air.

I was taking a flight to Florida and sitting next to a Belgian who was here in the United States buying up used Harley-Davidsons to ship back to Europe. He was wearing a leather jacket, and when he reached over to get something his jacket opened up a little bit and Lord have mercy did that boy smell.

I have an olfactory ‘problem’.

My sense of smell is almost ‘not there’.

Question...

Because one CAN’T smell, does that mean they DON’T or WON’T smell???

In today’s competitive airline service world, the ability to choose one’s seat prior to boarding is available for a fee.

Next time, sell your seat to the highest bidder.
Oh, and I do the same if the person behind me requests that I don’t recline my seat back.

Could be Bacteria, or could be a persons genetic makup.

Some people are unable to metabolize some cellular waste products and excretes them in sweat or the breath.

We also have differing abilities to smell and taste. Some people may be nose blind to a smell that someone else finds exquisitely disgusting! (I smell stinky stuff and have problems with perfume.)

THIS LINK lists diseases that result in body odor & it also lists genetic conditions that result in body odor. Some treatments are listed. (I would post it but have not quite figured out how to transfer to tables using HTML.)

https://academic.oup.com/jb/article/150/3/257/867730

Some of the conditions:

Phenylketonuria Sweat, urine, infant skin;

Isovaleric acidemia Skin, sweat Cheesy, acrid, sweaty feet;

Maple syrup urine disease Sweat, urine, ear wax;

Methionine malabsorption syndrome Skin, urine Malt, hop;

Hypermethioninemia Breath, sweat, urine:

Trimethylaminuria Breath, sweat, urine Foul, rotten fish-like;

Tyrosinaemia Breath Cabbage or rancid butter;

Cystinuria Urine Rotten egg Cadaverine:

If you eat too much protein and exercise a lot you may start to smell like Cat urine!

https://www.primallifeorganics.com/blogs/primal-life-organics-blog/q-a-why-does-my-sweat-smell-like-cat-pee-ammonia.

If anyone knows someone with one of these conditions you may have the the information to help them!

I was once seated next to a very large woman, wearing a tank top, who clearly hadn’t showered in a while. It was Honolulu to LA, so only 5 hours (IIRC, but it was over 20 years ago), but it was unbearable. I don’t know how you made it that far without being sick!

Even if one doesn’t shower for a week taking a wet warm soapy washcloth to the armpits and genital areas would do wonders. As for stinky clothes take a hot iron with steam to them to take out the stink. Better yet regular bathing and washing of clothes are highly recommended.

Even if I bathed just once a week, I know I wouldn’t stick.

How could anyone sit next to someone who stank that bad and not say something to them? I would have no compunctions telling a stranger that they stunk.

I manage a self storage facility just outside of Tacoma. I keep the door locked, mainly because it’s not a safe area. It also helps with a guy who obviously does not bathe frequently, and does not wash his clothes (he’s always wearing the same clothes). He is not a paying customer, he only comes in to raid my candy jar and talk about things I have no interest in, for like an hour. And when he leaves my office stinks for hours. Anymore, when I see him coming, I just go into the back office until he leaves (I can watch through a security camera on my phone). I’ve had regular, paying customers comment on the smell AFTER he’s been gone for a while. No more. I don’t put up with that. You live in a house with running water. USE IT.

the trick with the iron really does not work.
we lived in Africa, and the folks that had freshly pressed clothes smelled like BO and spray starch.
