That is why the Constituion has Article V. A balanced budget amendment would go a long ways towards cracking that nut.

. . . and that conceit is what undercuts the idea of a convention.

Why? Don’t I hate and fear inflation? Absolutely. But a “balanced budget” amendment would be worse than useless because it would automate tax rate (note, rate increases every time there is a deficit.

The only remedy would be a spending limitation amendment. With term limit teeth. You overspent last year? You don’t qualify for reelection.

And what is the criterion for “overspent?” You cannot spend more than you took in last year.

I repeat, a “balanced budget” criterion which admits the possibility that tax increases are the cure for all ills is no solution at all.

Oh, and while you’re at it, change the annual income tax filing date to October 15. And limit withholding so that everyone notices their tax bill.
