Republicans’ Emerging Defense: Trump’s Actions Were Bad, but Not Impeachable
NYT ^ | Feb 2, 2020 | Emily Cochrane

WASHINGTON — Even as they are set to acquit President Trump in his impeachment trial this week, Senate Republicans appear to be increasingly breaking with his defense that he did nothing wrong.

© Erin Schaff/The New York Times “I think he shouldn’t have done it — I think it was wrong,” said Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, center right. “Inappropriate, was the way I’d say it. Improper, crossing the line.” On Sunday, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, who was a key vote against calling witnesses in the Senate trial, expanded upon his criticism that Mr. Trump was “crossing the line” in his pressure campaign against Ukraine. And Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa, who has remained a reliable defender of the president during his trial, called his actions “not what I would have done.”

A day before the first contest of the 2020 election, two days before Mr. Trump’s State of the Union address and three days before his expected acquittal, they and other Republicans appeared to be coalescing around a more nuanced argument: Mr. Trump’s efforts to push Ukraine into investigating a political rival while withholding critical military aid might not have been appropriate. But that did not warrant the president’s removal from office for the first time in American history.

Not that is not the GOP emerging defense

It’s the emerging defense of Lamar Alexander and his ilk

But it’s being attributed to all of them by this New York Times slattern

Wishful thinking dingbat

Most republicans don’t care

The "other" Republicans amount to a "handful" but the media wants a talking point.

The President in all likelihood sinned. But a sin isn’t a crime much less than impeachable offense.

For that the punishment is disproportionate and out of bounds. And acquittal is therefore a given.

And while we’re at it, let’s take note of the fact the Democrat articles of impeachment don’t even charge the President with committing a crime.

They can’t accept the fact its much ado about nothing.

Impeachment is supposed to be reserved for high crimes and misdemeanors.

President Trump’s actions don’t fall into that category. This entire unwarranted ordeal has been a waste of the nation’s time.

As former AG Sessions failed to grasp, you don’t get immunity from criminal investigation just because you and the investigator belong to different political parties.

Tennessee has been providing weird MOTR republicans since 1860

Sometime I’m glad they did.....

Not this time

Lamar doesn’t like Trump is my guess and sees him as uncouth etc

But he doesn’t want to be a pariah at home should he actually return here

So many of them retire to the DC area

The problem with Tennessee is it’s really three states

East which used to be unionist but now is staunchly southern but Appalachian

Middle which used to be rolling antebellum ...bucolic country sorta like Ireland as Cleburne said his last afternoon on this earth ...where I reside 1000 yards from where he fell and an area dominated by Austin like Nashville surrounded by conservative counties all at this moment invaded and I do mean invaded by non southerners..some good some not so good but they tend to migrate to Nashville proper ...tall and skinny house land on tear downs

And west tennessee which begins at the tennessee River and runs to Memphis and his kind of like an extension of Mississippi’s delta and hill country and is similar in demographics and voting

Tennessee has never been like Mississippi whites are or Alabama whites are

It’s always been more moderate

This entire unwarranted ordeal has been a waste of the nation’s time.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = =

AND MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ‘down side’ is they would have wasted it elsewhere.

The ‘up side’ is they weren’t really able to screw us around while their heads were engulfed in the faux impeachment.

WHAT A COUNTRY
Congress has a Faux impeachment and some faux ‘Military heroes’ plus the run of the mill radicals and liars...
Senate has a Faux Indian, a Faux Combat Marine, some REAL plagiarists and liars.

AND that is what ‘they’ let us know.

Someone once said that a Government shut down or strike isn’t all that bad, at least they aren’t making laws to make Schift harder on us.

You do understand that if only one RINO Votes Guilty on either Count, the Rats and their Media Allies will push the Narrative that a Bipartisan Vote Convicted him, right?

If they get four RINO’s to Vote Guilty to one or both Counts it will pushed as a Majority Bipartisan Vote up until the November Election. It will also be used to thwart any future Judicial selections. especially if a vacant SCOTUS Appointment comes up.

The 67 Vote Threshold will never be reached, but it means nothing in this Election Year Political Theater, especially one where 99% of the Media is supporting the Democrat challenger, whomever that may end up being.

How many Morons thought that Trump would immediately be removed from Office when the House passed this nonsense? That is the level of Bias and Ignorance we are dealing with.

I will affirm my faith or lack thereof regarding the Electorate the day after the November Election. I will not allow myself to think that POTUS Trump’s Reelection is in the bag no matter what a Conservative Writer may think.

Trump: “Dear Ukraine, stop allowing our politicians to illegally launder money through you, or we will withhold that money.”

Democrats: “IMPEACH HIM!!!!”

You got 51 votes to deny witnesses. You’re not getting any of those 51 to vote to convict. You’re just as easily going to get a handful to Dems to vote to acquit like Manchin.

-—You do understand that if only one RINO Votes Guilty on either Count, the Rats and their Media Allies will push the Narrative that a Bipartisan Vote Convicted him, right?-—

The Rats are going to do that anyway. They’re already spinning that the entire Senate process is illegitimate. So who cares? Whiners gonna whine.

Beautifully written, it’s a keeper. Thank you.

I have never met a Tennessean that I haven’t liked. All of whom I have met seem to possess a solid amount of common sense in addition to an easy-going agreeable manner.

Trump's defense team was legally and politically pathetic.

Trump is the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Justice.

All Trump had to do was show that he had a good faith suspicion that Hunter and Joe Biden had violated USA law.

The only Trump lawyer who even mentioned this line of defense was Pam Bondi - and she was completely preempted by Kobe Bryant coverage.

Trump hired these lawyers. Trump approved his defense.

Trump has only himself to blame.

Trump’s actions to “Obstruct” the House were more than appropriate. He probably didn’t go far enough.

He even released the Transcript to be transparent, unlike the House and their transcripts from their secret star chambered, kangaroo court.
