Boris Johnson slams ‘America- bashers’ for spreading 'mumbo-jumbo' fears about US food standards

Boris Johnson today slammed 'mumbo-jumbo' fears about US food standards and NHS interference - as he insisted Britain will be the superhero of free trade.

The PM shrugged off 'hysteria' over issues like chlorinated chicken, joking that he thought Americans looked 'pretty well nourished'.

He said Britain's approach would be based on 'science', although he stressed that other countries will have to accept that the UK will not slash standards or compromise animal welfare.

The comments came as Mr Johnson delivered a keynote speech pledging to make the country a beacon for free trade now it has left the EU.

The Brits are obsessed with “chlorinated chicken” and Hershey’s chocolate. They forget that the French chlorinate their lettuce and Cadbury’s is hardly anything to write home about.

Brit food is probably the worst cuisine in the world except vanilla custard and roast beef. They’ve been on my ”watch list” for years. :-)

The EUrophiles are certainly obsessed with it. As for chocolate, personally I think Hershey’s is awful, Cadburies is OK but if I had to choose a national chocolate that was truly great I’d have to go with New Zealand’s Whittakers brand as the best standard mass produced chocolate in the world.

If we start striking trade deals with countries like NZ, I’m hoping we can start importing that.

that is the beginning of the end. Hershey will by them out and then it is all downhill.

Never tried it but certainly will. A good commercially produced chocolate is See's.

A local chocolatier once gave me a solid milk chocolate egg as a gratuity. Best chocolate I ever had.

Doubtful. Whittakers of New Zealand is still family owned and they have no interest in turning it into a public company. The Cadbury family sold out by floating it on the stock exchange and eventually lost control of the company. The Whittaker family have made a big success of it without having to list their company on the stock exchange and made it vulnerable to hostile takeover bids by companies like Kraft.

Whittaker’s is very difficult to find outside of NZ and Oz unfortunately. I’m hoping a free trade deal will see them exporting it abroad. It’s better than many artisan chocolates IMHO.

Well, if you eat Hersheys, perhaps you deserve what you get. We have other brands - in fact, most states here have their own chocolatiers who produce many wonderful chocolate candies. I was just in Mobile recently and bought some terrific stuff in a small, old-fashioned chocolate shop. But of course, you have to shell out for it and it’s easier for most British tourists to buy the cheapest chocolate and food and then grouse about it.

We all know that luxury chocolate is better than the mass produced stuff, but it costs too much to be a ‘staple’ chocolate. Whittakers of NZ is the best staple chocolate in the world, bar none. I’m sure there are artisan chocolates that could probably beat it in terms of taste, but it is the best chocolate you will get for the price.

The fact is that if England doesn’t like American chicken or chocolate, it doesn’t have to eat it. It doesn’t have to import it. The most reasonable people commenting at DM are saying exactly that. You can all eat organic chicken - I know you sell it. I just think you are all too cheap to buy it.
