Fine. I take it that you ate badly. As I’ve said, that’s not difficult, in the UK or anywhere else. And somebody visiting briefly in business is most likely to eat in chain catering outlets or business-friendly restaurants, which are two sorts of place where you are least likely to encounter the British food revolution of the last 30-odd years.
For some idea of what’s really happening in British food (both domestic and professional), you have to look no further than the regular food supplements in the main national papers (The Guardian’s is the best).
British food has been on an upward trajectory for a good few decades now - at about the same pace as food in France, incidentally, has been declining.

Plenty do. It’s just that Americans (and not just Americans) have very odd and anachronistic ideas of what ‘British Food’ actually is. Like the best food in the US, the best food in the UK is a synthesis of influences from many different food cultures, to which modern British chefs have added some of the best elements of the many different regional cuisines formerly within Britain, which became lost during the 20th century (for many reasons which it would take a long time to explain...!).

no! Have you tried a good fish and chips with salt and vinegar at a local chippie?

Or a good chicken tikka masala (despite the indian name it was invented in the UK).

Or even a cornish pasty?

TPF — you should head to the local pubs or local chip shops

here are some I’d recommend in London

1. the bear and staff - 10-12 Bear St, Charing Cross, London WC2H 7AS, United Kingdom

2. the prince of wales chip shop in lambeth

And even better head to BRighton for the pubs - don’t go to the center, churchill square etc. but head to seven dials.

British food is not the terrible boiled mutton only stuff that one reads in victorian novels - it’s changed.

I’ve never been to any of the poshy restaurants in London - I normally go to local pub for pub food and it’s most often very good.
