A Virginia man who went missing while kayaking in the Florida Everglades was found alive Monday afternoon, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Mark Miele, 67, embarked on a solo kayaking trip in the Everglades National Park on Jan. 22. He was due back on Jan. 29 but did not return.

His belongings, including his cellphone and wallet, were discovered Sunday night after they washed ashore.

No way in hell I would go kayaking in the Everglades.

If the gators don’t get you, the snakes will.

Yikes....lucky is an understatement. I’ve been out there in the dead of night on an airboat and the number of alligators was outrageous. The water moccasins are pretty abundant, as well.

"...found alive..."

If you ever go back in the Everglades Swamp, you better not go at night. There are things that creep around in them woods that make a grown man die from fright.

Agreed. Considering all the critters swimming around in the Glades, he is lucky to be alive.

Of course it took a long time, he was looking for the rapids.

A man can't live in the Everglades
Where a man can hide
And never be found
But he'd better stay clear from the baying hounds,
But he'd better keep movin' and don't stand still
If the skeeters don't get him then the gators will...

RIP Bob Shane

Used Life Vest properly,

Protected his face with easy to see T-shirt,

Wasn't moving to attract gators and he had no open wounds to stink.

So he was lucky and smart. Then again, smart people don’t kayak in the Everglades.

I’ve lived in Florida most of my life and I wouldn’t go out into the Everglades alone.

And I wouldn’t get into a kayak even for a short trip on the canal that’s 200 yards from my house.

Heck, I don’t even like driving down Alligator Alley to Miami, even after they widened it years ago.

High Springs has some beautiful water....there is a lot of human traffic there which would make it somewhat less attractive to alligators. They do exist in probably every fresh water body of water here - and sometimes in the salt water, too. The Everglades is like nature’s Wild West. Especially when you get off the touristy airboat paths. I wouldn’t worry about High Springs but kayaking in the Everglades, especially if you’re not familiar with the area, is just not smart.

My sympathies for your daughter’s political choices. There’s a video about a group of young men who went to Cuba to enjoy the Socialist paradise they see in the brochures Everything You’ve Seen About Cuba Is A Lie . Perhaps you should share it with her!

Used Life Vest properly,

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Step #1 - Wear the darn thing!!

We have a cabin on a very large lake & early Spring (water very cold) before last, two fishermen drowned. The wind got up & so did the waves - they likely hit one wrong & it capsized their boat. When the bodies were found, one had no life vest & the other was wearing one, but it appeared it possibly didn’t inflate properly. They weren’t that far off shore - might have made it with a life vest on/inflated if the cold water didn’t get them first. Very tragic. When things go majorly awry (split second timing, often), that is not the time to be trying to get into a vest.

I went to visit last mother’s day. We went to springs. I told her I’m worried about snakes. She said, no snakes. I saw three that day...lol. Harmless, but snakes nonetheless which I hate!

I grew up in the Everglades but now live in TN. We took our bass boat there to fish several years ago when my daughter was young. As soon as we launched the boat I put my finger under her nose and said “don’t drag your fingers in the water here like you do back home (TN). So, what’s the first thing she does? Yep, she drags her fingers in the water. I turned my head to check on her just as a big Cottonmouth came up after her fingers. I grabbed the back of her shirt and pulled her to the floor of the boat just in time. Her eyes were as big as saucers because she saw it the same time I jerked her off her seat. No more fingers dragging in the water for the rest of the trip.

This doesn’t smell right to me. How did he get separated from his kayak and belongings? Are the bodies of water in the Everglades that large?
