Trump to Propose $4.8 Trillion Budget With Big Safety-Net Cuts. White House seeks savings through curbs on Medicare, Medicaid while boosting funds for military, veterans
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 9, 2020 | Kate Davidson and Andrew Restuccia

President Trump is expected to release a $4.8 trillion budget Monday that charts a path for the start of a potential second term, proposing steep cuts to social-safety-net programs and foreign aid and higher outlays for defense and veterans.

The plan would increase military spending 0.3%, to $740.5 billion for fiscal year 2021, which begins Oct. 1, according to a senior administration official. The proposal would cut nondefense spending by 5%, to $590 billion, below the level Congress and the president agreed to in a two-year budget deal last summer.

A White House budget reflects an administration’s priorities and represents the opening bid in spending negotiations for the next fiscal year. The new budget proposal is unlikely to become law, however, as Democrats control the House and spending bills in the GOP-led Senate need bipartisan support.

This year, the budget also reveals Mr. Trump’s fiscal policy objectives should he win reelection in November, and his campaign messaging will likely reflect its broad strokes. The president’s aides have been meeting since late last year to craft a second-term agenda.

Among the agencies that would receive the biggest boost is NASA, which would see a 12% increase next year as Mr. Trump seeks to fulfill his goal of returning astronauts to the moon by 2024. On the other hand, the Environmental Protection Agency’s spending would be slashed by 26%.

The plan would request $2 billion in new funding for construction of the wall on the southern U.S. border, the senior administration official said—Mr. Trump’s signature 2016 campaign promise that sparked fights with Democrats in Congress, leading the president to trigger a historic five-week government shutdown last winter after lawmakers refused to fund the project. The latest $2 billion request is significantly less than the $5 billion the administration sought last year.

I’d like to see a Federal Budget that is <5% of GDP, like in the 1920s.

if Liz Warren wants socialized medicine, she can have the taxpayers of Massachusetts pay for it for themselves.

And no, the money Fed.gov spends in Ukraine is not ‘defending us from the Russians’ its rather a corruption feed-back loop for certain politicians and their cronies here in the USA.

The deficit is huge - many trillions of dollars - and unless Trump spearheads DRASTIC, HUGE cuts in the size of the feds, the Delusional Lying Leftist Dems will scream for HIGHER TAXES to bring down the deficit.

The deficit isn’t good, but higher taxes are MUCH worse.

I’m not sure I believe much of this will happen. I love 99% of what Trump has done, but the budget gets a D-.

Do you know NPR/PBS got an INCREASE in funding this year? Thanks to the GOP senate.

These are all “chinese dollars”

There are automatic escalators in the budget. Few escalators are justified even though built in. There are tons of programs that have well passed their need but still get an automatic increase.

If, God forbid, you say you get 2% vs the automatic 3% that is built in, it is called a “cut”.

I wonder what the economic boom has done to federal revenue?

I would vote the bullet if there was long-term plan to get control of this spending. The federal government is like a drug addict, republicans and democrats.

A moot point anyway..., no Presidential budget submission in my lifetime has been adopted (well maybe FDR's was...), they are all DOA upon submission.

An honest question. Just where are these increases in military spending to be applied? Is it to keep our troops in regions we should be done with? Or is it to increase basic pay, housing availability, and the like for the troops? The latter I can support. The other, nope.

How long will it take before we become a banana republic and inflation is out of sight? Will civil war then take place hourly and daily?

Go back to the Constitution as written and originally understood and intended. Use the Constitution as the absolute legitimate and legal reason MANDATING most of the now totalitarian federal government to disappear. No more deficit and the IRS becomes a storefront.

THAT is the answer my FRiend.

Yes, it would seem impossible, but first we must know what we must do to restore our Free Constitutional Republic - we must know what our goal is.

Then we should realize our God is the God of the impossible. The same Divine Providence that used a bunch of rag-tag colonists to miraculously defeat England, the greatest military power on earth at the time, to create America is here now to miraculously restore that same America.

Bloating the money supply to float the unlimited size of the now totalitarian federal government beast creates inflation. Deficits are only an enabler of continuing this unconstitutional disaster.

Kill the 80% unconstitutional portion of the feds and you’ve solved the problem. Not easy. Not a one-step process. But let’s at least know what needs to happen.
