My wife is from that part of the world and has a weak immune system, so I’m a bit conservative here.
Stage 1 was to keep her away from large concentrations of people from that part of the world, so I had her do her ‘ethnic’ shopping on Monday morning (rather than the weekends, when she usually goes), virtually empty store. Needless to say, it’s all playing the odds.
Stage 2 is to close out ethnic shopping and minimize all shopping, so going to ‘US’ stores on weekday mornings. Not quire there yet, but watching closely.
Stage 3 would be for her to minimize or eliminate all ethnic contacts (same for me, since if I catch it...not good).
Stage 4 would be to minimize all contacts - I would only do the shopping, and only as much as necessary, with small crowds.
Stage 5 would be pulling it all in and hunkering down. We could do that now for months, but it would be a crappy life, so we’ll wait on it.

Agree...it now begins. Just a whimper, now. Maybe some empty shelf space at Walmart scattered in a few areas (not that I would ever shop there), but then some more empty shelves. And then, once people put two and two together, expect PANIC, as is happening in Asia now.

Yeah, it’s just not on the radar her. I suggested to my brother that he stock up for a month, and his reply was he would think about it. I think it will take a death in the community or even family before people start feeling real concern. Then the run on groceries starts.

My (very reasonable) wife is fine with me buying a second chest freezer, so as to be able to store another 50+ lbs. of meat and cheese. As I see it, power will be the last to go, but long before that, people will be lining up for food (as they are in China now, and to some extent, in other parts of Asia).
I prefer to not be standing in line, wearing a mask, with others right by me, for hours.
I’m the same. DH and I are very much on the same page - in fact our farm started as a “prep”, turned into a hobby, and now is both, of that makes sense.

Chinese authorities have started diagnosing coronavirus cases in the Hubei province via CT scans.
The scans aren’t as thorough as a blood tests, but doctors in Wuhan, where the virus originated, are reportedly running short on test kits.
To diagnose the virus, physicians look for white patches called “ground glass,” which signal fluid in the lungs.
Authorities in China’s Hubei province reported a dramatic spike in coronavirus cases on Thursday: 14,840 new cases.

Here is my conclusion based on all the evidence so far.
The reason President Trump is not nuking China right now is that he knows and understands that this is a China problem that will not affect the rest of the world.
The reason that Wuhan, Hubei Province is the only real estate on earth being affected by this virus in such a pandemic fashion, is that this was a big mistake on the part of the BL4 lab Win Wuhan.
The BL4 lab in Wuhan worked out a vaccine for SARS. They gave it to everyone in Hubei province. Then they started working on a biological weapon that would affect everyone who did NOT have the vaccine.
The effed up royally. They put in the wrong gene sequence or something, and the new biological weapon only affected those people who HAD the vaccine.
Somehow, this new engineered virus came into contact with the people of Wuhan. Accident or live test, who knows. This is why only people of Wuhan are infected at such a high rate wth this virus, and why travel precautions are focused on this Chinese province.
This explains the less virulent spread of the virus outside Hubei province, whether in other Chinese provinces or in the rest of the world.
And the Trump administration knows this, because they know everything. It’s pretty obvious with the info that is now coming out of China.
Yes, local outbreaks in non=Chinese countries are still possible because of a traveler from Wuhan, and take precautions! But from existing evidence, these infections will be mild.
But there will never be a another place on earth that has the tragedy of Wuhan. This disaster will continue there, and everyone there needs your prayers. And while you are praying for them, pray for the utter destruction of the Chinese Communist Party.
Cheese is a good idea I hadn’t thought of, although we do have some dried cheese in #10 cans. The real cheese would be very satisfying. I have enough solar to easily run the freezer and hot plates, etc., even if power does go.

Yea, I read up on cheese. The harder stuff (like cheddar) is good to freeze, just crumbly after, but then if you melt it, it’s fine - and I always do!
I wouldn’t look at the ‘fires’ as just human crematoriums. China also has an outbreak of H5N6 bird flu. Killed a bunch of swans first so now they are slaughtering hundreds of thousands of fowl. Also fowl are dying supposedly from lack of feed (must have been 5thousand ducks/chickens dead at one facility). Haven’t seen many cats or dogs on the streets in videos, either. All of that being burned.

I saw a video, they were driving pigs into fire pits. Very sad, but they also have a huge Swine Flu outbreak, and what else could they do on a practical level - kill them one by one and then carry them into the pits? It sucked, but it made sense what they were doing.

makes perfect sense. Main reason: Two mid-level party members have been offed. The incoming very high ranking party member doesn’t want to inherit the formers’ numbers because he doesn’t want to meet the same fate. And since he’s seen as close to WinniethePooh, it puts Xi on the spot. So...clean the chalkboard and start fresh. Second reason: CT scans couldn’t be backed up by testing because the kits were going to private hospitals before going to Wuhan, who was getting, it was said, less than 3000 kits a day and only tested people could be reported as confirmed. This held the numbers confirmed down. Under new leadership, doctors can now ‘clinically’ diagnose without waiting for a test. Third reason: Nobody trusts the WHO which has already bungled their end, so it’s getting harder and harder not to let CDC in - and with the evacuees, the US has it’s own data now. The numbers have to come up so the hiding of Chinese data doesn’t look so bad. (at least that’s my impression)
If it takes a while for the virus to move from lower lung to nose, swabbing isn't reliable anyway for early detection. Even reagent assays aren't reliable early on. People make the mistake of hearing something on the news and assuming science knows everything about a virus when medicine is still only a month into this.
I think a large bag of rice, dried pasta, and some flavoring are a great investment. Maybe some juice. If this passes painlessly, we’ll use it anyway, and it’s less than $50.
