'Biden could still win' South Carolina, experts say, as field remains split

When Joe Biden left New Hampshire on Tuesday before the votes had been counted in the state’s primary and held an event in South Carolina, it was widely viewed as a sign of desperation by a faltering campaign.

But while many have written off Biden’s presidential bid as being on life support, South Carolina political observers and insiders told Yahoo News that he’s still got a good chance of winning the Feb. 29 primary in the Palmetto State.

“I think Biden could still win,” said Gibbs Knotts, chair of the political science department at the College of Charleston and the author of a book on the history of the South Carolina primary. “I think his long-term relationships that he’s built in this state mean something.”

A poll by East Carolina University released Friday showed Biden continuing to lead the field with 28 percent, ahead of Sen. Bernie Sanders, at 20 percent. But Biden’s support was down from the 40 percent share of the vote he had in most polls over the summer, and South Carolina political experts agree that if he does pull off a victory there, it could be a narrow one.

Oh noes.

The first few caucuses are in states where the voters are different in what issues drive them than laters states.

Just like it has been for decades.

Biden could win a few southern states and get some delegates here and there—which will keep him in the race for a while, babbling incoherently, groping women and girls, and doing a Don Rickles imitation with everyone else.

It is just a matter of time before he insults blacks and/or Jews.

The only interesting question is—which minority or ethnic group will he insult first?

A Biden win in SC would serve to further muddy the waters of the Dem primary race.

Go, Joe, go!!!!

If Biden were to win or place high enough to reinforce his delusions, it would be very bad for Bloomberg and good for Sanders. Bloomberg desperately wants Biden out before Super Tuesday.

If he can convince democrats that Iowa and NH are too white to reflect the true values of the party, he might be able to pull himself up and start gaining some delegates. The anger/liar attitude might actually help him if he can direct it better. Overall though, without obama’s support, he has lost already.

Excellent point.

After Super Tuesday the race will either be: Sanders vs a bunch of contenders with no chance.

or: Sanders vs one serious contender (possibly Bloomberg, Biden, Butt-man are long shots).

Biden staying in the race would be wonderful comic relief.

The ultimate comic relief would be if Sanders had a plurality but not 50% going into the convention and the nomination were awarded to Biden on the second ballot.

That would make the 1968 convention (in and out of the convention hall) look like a Victorian Tea Party by comparison.

The problem is that if he “wins” in a state he is supposed to be “strong” in, it will be by a point or less. That will be dismissed as another indication that he is badly damaged.

And am I the only one that notices how he looks like Bob Barker?

I have maintained that the polls have no validity for Biden when there is actual voting. It is my belief that primary voters intending to vote for Biden, are casting a different vote when the actual moment arrives, for a variety of reasons.

As it comes closer to the time to vote, voters start doing Internet searches on the candidates they are considering (if they are undecided, which many Dem voters are in this primary cycle).

They then find an endless parade of Biden gaffes and gropes. If they dig deeper they find out about the Burisma bribery scam.

Then they vote for somebody else, _anybody_ else.
