I’m glad there’s people there who appreciate this.

Kids since the 1990s have been told they have to go to college if they don’t want to end up flipping burgers for the rest of their lives. They weren’t being given a weighing of their options or told that Vo tech was a good alternative, I’ve never heard a single person say that.

They trusted the authority figures in their lives and went to college, not all for useless degrees, and a lot are stuck working those dreaded service jobs they were threatened with if they didn’t go to college in the first place.

No it’s what some call “degree inflation.”

The problem is that you got so many people now with bachelor degrees that it’s become what’s expected of an applicant. It is no longer impressive. In the 70s and 80s, a bachelor degree would get you the job. Today, that same degree for the same job will only maybe get you in the door for an interview...if lucky.

Many HR departments get flooded with resumes. So one way they knock it down is increase the job requirements. Jobs that required a HS diploma now require a associates degree. Jobs that required a Bachelors now require a Masters. And so on.... Employers can now demand that.

They aren’t using their degrees because there is little demand for many majors.

That’s actually a good statistic, because 70% to 80% of the overpriced, PC-BS “degrees” awarded by our universities are useless and not worth the paper that they are written on.

Looks like they still have some value...

"The December 2019 unemployment rate for individuals aged 22 to 27 with a bachelor’s degree or higher was, at 3.9 percent, slightly higher than the 3.6 percent unemployment rate for all workers between the ages of 16 and 65. However, it was lower than the 6.5 percent unemployment rate for 22- to 27-year-olds without a four-year degree. The unemployment rate for all college graduates up to age 65 was 2.2 percent."

Too many people think they are too good to unclog someone’s toilet, even for $100/hr.

In my opinion, a clear indication of “over education” or useless degrees.

Blame this crap on the employers.

Why blame the employer?

If you were looking for an employee, would you take a high school drop out over a college graduate?

College is the new high school.

Most liberal arts people don’t anywhere near the intelligence to do math required to get a BSEE. I know because I are one.

“My college had lots of job fairs and companies always on campus. “

Same here. But now with the internet it is quite easy to search and find companies in one’s field.

I think one problem now from observing my son go through this exercise is that companies nowadays get so many more applications than back in the day ... so you have to have one heck of a resume for anyone with any authority to see it.

“ We should not encourage everyone to go to college by making it “free” ...”

That’s the trick of socialism. Socialists will decide who goes to college (their kids, their supporters’ kid, a few diversity lackeys, etc) for free, thus reducing the total number of students, so that the bill to the government won’t look so bad.

You’re right. Especially with society telling kids that you must go to college.

So, you would want more than 1/2 of college freshman to not bother attending more than 3 semesters?

That’s a good point. When I was a senior manager in a STEM field I noticed an unmistakable trend over time. Over the last 10-15 years I saw a growing number of entry-level job applicants who fit a predictable profile: age 24-27, master’s degree, and impressive grades ... but NEVER WORKED EVEN A PART-TIME JOB BEFORE.

This seems odd. Considering the recent explosion in gender identities, it would seem that a degree in gender studies would be a ticket to an excellent, high-paying job.

That’s the problem. I’ve looked at my kids and they seem decent, but no interviews.

I’m really surprised by my daughter.

That would be my daughter. She has a brain injury and had seizures. High school was all about controlling them and getting used to more meds and having trouble with meds.

In college, she got to go off of the meds, but it was hard to go to college and get a job.

She’s been done with college since August and no luck getting anything.

My daughter is taking classes to become a master woodworker. Makes me wish I was still young.
