I think he just saw this debate as a necessary evil to get out of the way.

It wasn't. He didn't even qualify to participate under the normal rules. Paid off DNC Chair Tom Perez to change the rules just so he could qualify.
He didn't need to do that. He was doing fine not participating in the debates and blanketing the airwaves with slick ads.

That crossed my mind - that he hoped to not qualify.

I just see him as a spoiler.

Any chance the DNC changed the rules to allow Mini to debate knowing that he would crash and burn? Perhaps this was their way of telling him that he is not welcome, only his money is welcome.

the rules just for him. Ironically, he was doing fine before the debates just blanketing the airwaves with slick ads.

Yet, there's something so satisfying about the way he cooked his own goose, on the debate stage, in full view of the electorate.
