>>>I’ve ridden my sport motorcycles from end to end of that road many times. Sometimes sedately, sometimes absolutely hauling ass.<<<<

Said every person who ended up going over and in pieces 500 feet down. Exactly the kind of driver I wouldn’t be caught dead driving with on that road....LOL

Years ago when I was young and stupid I was getting gas in Big Sur and had an open beer on the console. Another driver saw it. I drove off and a few miles later a CHP was right behind me with the siren and lights flashing. From a bull horn I heard “please pull over around the next bend”. So I pulled over thinking oh shit....

He flew past me....

You don’t think the fact it was a rental Camaro that had something to do with it?

A Camaro is a bad car. Probably being driven too fast.

Dangerous? meh, been there, done that. Very pretty drive.
Try driving Independence Pass, then tell me which is more dangerous.
Start watching at about 2:25 mark.

Drove it in 1976 on a Kawasaki triple, lots of fun.

I had a panic attack myself once on a one-lane mountain dirt road. The ironic thing is I have snow skied down the hill right beside the road with no problem, but for some reason it got me that day.

I rode a motorcycle on that road back in the 60s. Most beautiful drive anywhere.

Scarier road: Independent Pass in Colorado!

______________________________________

I was in Colorado a year and 1/2 ago. I went 50 miles out of my way to drive that.

That and the Million Dollar Highway was THE best roads I’ve driven. Having said that - I DO want to drive the PCH.

I drove it decades ago alone. Yes you have to avoid distraction too much. If you want to sight see pull over into one of the turnouts and get out of the car. If you are heading south you’re on the outside lane. Going north you have a slight margin of error.

I drove it from San Simeon to Carmel on my Honda Civic HX coupe back in 2007. The road is very narrow with lots of sharp curves, and even in my little Civic I thought it was a bit dangerous to drive.

Scarier road: Independent Pass in Colorado!

Had my wife on Independence Pass a few years ago. She saw a box truck heading up the side of the mountain, and said “look at those fools...their idiots!” Then she saw my nav unit and the switchback coming up. She didn’t realize we were following them until then! It was yelling screaming the whole way! She wanted to get out and walk.

Me too, on Independence Pass!

I don’t like either driving it or being a passenger driving it.

I will drive those extra miles out of the way to avoid the extra thrill of Independence Pass in southern Colorado!

Then come to east TN and drive the Dragon along the western edge of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. It’s about eleven miles of narrow two lane road with well over 100 tight curves and totally loved by motorcycle riders all over the eastern US. Its narrowness and tight curves make CA 1 through the Big Sur look wide and straight. I know. I live in E TN about 60 miles from the Dragon and have driven it on a motorcycle and in a SUV. I also have relatives in CA and have driven CA 1.
