I am reminded of the correspondents' dinner scene in Advice and Consent, where the President used the occasion to announce his intention to stick with Leffingwell as his SOS nominee. I suspect that viewers of the movie 60 years ago would have been surprised at the tactic. Today the dinner is so irrelevant that no one outside the Inner Circle of DC will notice or care.

Correct, it's just a way to stroke the egos of the pretenders who want something to feel like a Hollywood awards show that they would never be invited to.
