‘The inner Putin coming out’: Russian president touts ‘integration’ with Ukraine
Washington Examiner ^ | February 21, 2020 | Joel Gehrke

Posted on 02/22/2020 3:24:15 AM PST by tlozo

Russia could regain its status as “a global rival” for Western powers through some degree of “integration” with Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said...

Putin made the comment while reiterating his belief that Ukrainians and Russians are “the same people,” a claim widely perceived as a means to justify Russian influence over former Soviet nations. His reference to “integration” is even more unusual, and incendiary, according to Western analysts, given that the two countries have been locked in conflict since Russia’s annexation of Crimea and invasion of Ukraine in 2014...

Multiple Western analysts noted that Putin has been pressuring Belarus to form a new political union with Russia, a political shift that could enable him to remain president of the expanded Russian state. That effort is anchored in an ambiguous 1998 political agreement between the two countries. Ukrainian authorities never signed such a deal, and the current conflict has alienated the two peoples despite Putin’s long-running effort to deny that Russian military forces invaded Ukraine.

“The Ukrainians understand now that the Russians, particularly this group in the Kremlin, are no longer their brothers,” another former U.S. official familiar with Russian-Ukrainian issues told the Washington Examiner. “From the Ukrainian standpoint, it's ludicrous to even contemplate.”

Alisa Muzergues, a foreign policy analyst at GLOBSEC, echoed that assessment and added that the attempt to maintain influence in Ukraine is partly a way to appeal to the domestic Russian population.

“Putin is striving for recognition of Russia as a superpower, but while having limited capacities, it can only have a direct influence on its immediate neighborhood,” she told the Washington Examiner. "And Ukraine is indeed a crucial player in this game of Putin’s influence due to a number of reasons: economic, cultural, historic — but also it is important for his influence inside Russia.”...

There was a Sovu\iet propagandist years ago who would do US media. Thought he’s probably dead.

The Russian propaganda is very heavy on this thread.

Yep, ‘borderland’, ‘a frontier’. Now think for a moment how would you call yourself living near US-Mexican border? I guess ‘borderlander’ doesn’t sound good. You’ll call yourself American or Mexican depending on your nationality. The same applies to Ukraine before 1920s.

This is what I'm talking about.

One of the main reasons I voted for Trump was his policy to pursue closer relations with Russia, which was and is in our national interest ("Our" in this case refers to the United States of America where I am a citizen).

There's a difference between wanting to have close relations with Russia and wanting to push their propaganda.

Trump get's it right.

The left and some here, not so much.

The point is hard to get. If you are talking about propaganda you should say what exactly is wrong with it. It has to be factually wrong and inciting. Please, tell what exactly here is factually incorrect? I actually have hard time believing how anyone in US who aren’t a Democrat are buying Ukrainian line after their Trump election lie.

“The Russian propaganda is very heavy on this thread.”

Thought Vlad Posner’s family had hijacked FR. It’s like a walk down memory lane during the Cold War when President Reagan was in office.

Pretty amazing or pretty bad. One thing I remembered about Posner who did Soviet propaganda appearances on American media. The more ignorant the person, the more willing he would be to engage them.

But if someone who knew the true nature of the Soviet regime came on, the more vicious and the more vicious lies he would use in attack.

That these very old memories would be revived, let alone here on FR is amazing.
Or rather, amazingly bad. Russian propaganda is simply everywhere.

“I really wonder why do you call my posts attacks. Correct me if something posted is factually incorrect.”

You call freedom loving people fighting for freedom in Ukraine Nazis which is exactly what Posner would do. It’s also what the commies do here.

Isn’t your post a sign of ignorance? How do you define a freedom loving person?
Is a 50 IQ point freeloader following McCain’s lies for EU freebies a freedom loving person for you?
Are you with Biben telling Hunter’s affair a ‘debunked’ Trump’s lie?

“Isn’t your post a sign of ignorance? How do you define a freedom loving person?”

Actually, I was in Ukraine during the Orange Revolution by invitation of family working for the US Embassy.

So you’re pushing ignorance into a mirror not on me.

Orange revolution was in 2004 and ended in bitter failure. Its leaders were chased out of office after ruining the country down with single digit approval ratings. They ruined national economy and sold missile technology to China and Iran for personal gain. Do you support it? What of the above contributed to US national interests?

“Orange revolution was in 2004 and ended in bitter failure.”

Hey Vlad Posner, is that you?

Oh the hangover from communism isn’t over but it’s not a failure so long as the national flag blue & yellow flies over the country. From what I saw, it flies everywhere!

“...to US national interests?”

With President Trump now leading the national interests, Ukraine is defending itself after the Russian invasion killing thousands with his little green men and stopped the Russian expansion.

Was it only yesterday that Puke-in was talking again about his dream for a Soviet revival and seeing Ukraine incorporated back under Moscow’s rule?

Oh yes, I think he just did.

So do you think Putin’s expansionist dreams into other countries and Ukraine is in the US national interests? Tell us Vlad.

It is hard to argue with a person engaged in manifests for discussion instead of factual argument. Especially a person ‘invited by the US Embassy’ for revolution. Maybe Hunter Biden is your friend.
‘Freedom loving’ sure. Al-Qaeda is your ‘freedom-loving’ friend of late too recently.
And yes, everyone disagree with you is a Russian troll.

Good gawd man, you are such a Russian troll.

The Ukrainians despise the Russians.

Period.

....”Ukrainians despise the Russians”.....

You might want to speak with those in the north and other areas of Ukraine....where that is certainly not the case.

Ukraine has exactly three smart politicians right now: Eugene Muraev but he is Russian, Yelena Lukash but she is Moldovan/Italian and Mykola Azarov but he was a Yanukovich’s right hand.
Lukash was instrumental is bringing down corrupt pro-Hillary administration to make current government elected and she was persecuted for it under false charges by the old government and the new government fails to make her false charges dropped.

Indeed they did. It was a heck of a battle there as I recall...Ukraine was relentless at destroying it.
