a back room deal with some other candidates to support them? My guess is that a deal benefits Sanders the most, if he could get Buttigieg to stop siphoning away delegates that Sanders needs to win the majority and avoid a brokered convention.

Could be all three. Also consider that the polling for Super Tuesday looked awful (under 10% in CA), so he can pull out before he is completely humiliated.
