Boom times in Idaho
Coeur d'Alene Press ^ | March 2, 2020 | Bill Buley

The Gem State’s population is expected to continue to grow due to a multitude of reasons

“Look outside your window today,” said Derrell Hartwick, president and CEO of the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce. “You can see what the great draws are.”

And if you looked outside Friday, you saw beautiful blue skies, sunshine and plenty of green. You saw people biking, walking dogs and sitting down with coffee. And if you went one step further and stepped outside, you felt a warm 60 degrees — and it was still February.

Hartwick, who recently moved to Coeur d’Alene, spoke of a place where people can find a good life, a good job, meet good people, “and still have fun” in the great outdoors with rivers, lakes and mountains all around.

Idaho, according to the United States Census Bureau, was the fastest growing state in the United States, percentage-wise, from July 2018 to July 2019.

According to the Census Bureau, Idaho’s population increased to 1.79 million by July, up from 1.75 million 12 months earlier. Nevada was second, increasing 1.7% to 3.1 million, while Arizona was third, also at 1.7%, to 7.3 million people, the Census Bureau reported.

“Apparently, everyone wants to live in Idaho,” wrote Kathy Morris, marketing manager for Zippia, a resource site for job seekers...people are moving to Idaho from California, Washington, Utah, Oregon and Arizona.

“Idaho may be known for potatoes and Midwestern manners, but it has a lot more to offer new residents than just that,” the report said. “Idaho has low housing costs that mean home ownership is more than just a dream for Idaho residents — it’s an achievable reality. But you might want to get there soon, the housing market in Idaho is burning hot and rising fast.”

Jamé Davis, president and CEO of the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce, is a native Idahoan (Post Falls is just west of Coeur d'Alene): “the trends and data don’t lie — Idaho continues to welcome new residents for a few different reasons.” Davis cited affordability, a strong job market, world-class health care system, and quality of life. “Businesses like to relocate and expand into Idaho because of the business friendliness of the state and a skilled and educated workforce,” Davis wrote in an email to The Press. Other factors have Idaho rising in national public opinion:
I think there are other huge factors at work, too, that are not mentioned in the article. These types of articles all say people are coming for a better quality of life, lower prices, cheaper housing, lower taxes, and lower crime. But they NEVER mention how the liberals in WA, OR and CA have totally destroyed those states. Those states have extremely sky-high taxes, rampant homeless, spreading diseases, are all pro-illegal / pro-"sanctuary," pro-homo, pro-tranny, druggies everywhere, pro-crime DAs, needles, poop, graffiti everywhere, and fewer and fewer people speak English. Of course, the newest factor is COVID-19 is spreading along the west coast.

Dysfunctional WA, OR and CA all favor of every perversion and dysfunction under the sun. The newest absolutely moronic stupidity in California is the proposed law that would ban Girls and Boys clothing departments at stores so tranny children aren't offended.

See California Would Ban Boys' and Girls' Toy, Clothing Sections under New Bill. I kid you not!

I believe people are fleeing this crap as much as they are fleeing an increasingly shitty quality of life in WA, OR, and CA.

Either the people who write these articles don’t have a clue how bad it is in those states (which is possible if they don't travel there) or they KNOW and won’t write about it because they are liberal kooks who want to bring that dysfunction to Idaho.

The place sucks. Cold weather, lousy right wing politics, everyone carries a gun and they’ll shoot you. Move to Siberia, safer, warmer, and they are communists. IDAHO SUCKS!

The place sucks.

Yup. These sorts of puff pieces never tell you about the cracks in the earth spitting hot lava or the realtors who specialize in leading prospective buyers to the dripping fangs of hungry wolf packs. The wildebeest stampedes through the center of town. The crazed rightwing troglodytes whose eyes are so close together they don't even need binoculars, cleaning their assault rifles with the bones of environmentalists and swilling moonshine from tin cups at the finest restaurants, most of whose licenses are suspended for poisoning Californians with home-brewed Fugu poison. No, don't move to Idaho, it's a horrible place!

Another issue which we aren’t supposed to talk about, is that places such as Idaho have small minority populations, which in turn means they don’t have nearly as many gang violence problems, drive by shootings, etc.

It makes you wonder about why some largely rural and small town states such as Idaho are attracting new residents. Is it because of the business climate and housing costs, or are people wanting to escape places such as California? Or a combination of factors?

Colorado Part 2? All I see is another red state going blue because the socialists now want to move there.

Yep. No other conclusion. Snow up to you eyebrows nine months of the year. Horrible bugs - mosquitos so big they will carry your dog away.

Stay away. Don’t come here.

I hate it when I get to an intersection the same time as another car and we spend five minutes each waving for the other guy to go first. What a time suck!

It’s all the positive things listed in the article. Plus it’s people fleeing all the negatives in shithole CA, OR, and WA.

But, as BillTheDrill and Equine1952 wrote above - stay away. Idaho sucks!

Turned sideways, Idaho has a frightening resemblance to an assault weapon.

With small minority populations, you find that Idaho towns have almost zero graffiti. Another big plus making cities and towns a lot more pleasant.

The people who live here in Idaho are fairly peaceful. We do seem to have a fair number of shootings recently. Most of the suspects have a hispanic surname and many come from out of state. A common theme with those shooters is drug involvement. Most doesn't mean all. We've got a few non-hispanic white drug abusers/thieves/shooters. The up side is competent police departments that deal with them and citizens that carry so that there are few unarmed victims.

No. Worries. Democrat transplants will fix that issue.

My wife and I were doing a cross country drive from PA to deliver my son’s new Jeep to him near Seattle (where he was stationed). When we drove by Coeur d’Alene, coming down the mountains, it looked like a dream vacation spot. A big lake with people boating and swimming, fishing...straight out of a post card.

Completely changed my idea of what Idaho was like.

These positive stories are all a load of BS. I moved here from Alaska in 2002. The winters are only two weeks shorter than up there. The mosquitoes - while not as numerous - are twice as big. There are black and grizzly bears, wolf packs, and mountain lions carrying off small children every day. The water is all polluted from mine tailings. During the summer the air is not breathable due to wildfire smoke (really). Save yourself, STAY AWAY!

Seriously though, the home prices in North Idaho are getting ridiculous and there are a lot of meth heads (where isn’t there a lot of meth heads?).

I like Oklahoma and Texas. I’m so tired of winter here in Iowa, and I’m thinking Idaho probably isn’t that much better. They do have good homeschool laws, I think, for the grandkids.

Yeah, I know.. tornadoes, but that livens things up.
