200 nurses furloughed in New York, Connecticut over coronavirus exposure
New York Post ^ | March 16, 2020 | Kenneth Garger

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont claims Danbury Hospital is already at overcapacity.

Two hundred nurses employed by an interstate health system in New York and Connecticut have been out of work since potentially being exposed to coronavirus patients, a report said.

The health care workers from Nuvance Health will remain sidelined until they can obtain coronavirus tests to determine if they were infected, according to the Hartford Courant, citing Gov. Ned Lamont.

Lamont was discussing the dire situation at Danbury Hospital, which he said was “at capacity,” on MSNBC’s “All In With Chris Hayes” when he made the shocking revelation.

“Well I can tell you, Danbury Hospital is already at capacity. And they have 200 nurses on furlough because they were in contact,” Lamont told host Chris Hayes.

The hospital is treating the state’s first coronavirus patient. A staffer there, who resides in New York, had also tested positive for the virus last week.

It’s unclear if all the furloughed nurses are based solely at Danbury Hospital. But, according to the Hartford Courant, they all work for Nuvance Health system, which is comprised of seven hospitals in western Connecticut and New York’s Hudson Valley region.

“If I can test those nurses, I can potentially get them back into the game a lot sooner,” Lamont said Monday night.

“We’ve got a surge in use, demand is going up and I’m losing nurses by the day who have to furlough themselves for a period of time. That’s a priority for testing for me.”

Probably.

Typically, hospital ICUs are at 60% capacity....even more, during flu season. Cuomo said that NY ICUs are at 80% capacity...before the onslought of COVID-19 pts.

NY has 53,000 hospital staffed beds, of which 3,000 are ICU beds.

Danbury Hospital has 396 staffed beds of which 41 are ICU.

Cuomo blames it (in a sideways comment) on the fact that the hospitals are private....and, that’s just the way they’re set up...all across the country.

As if socialized hospitals would have more!

Ha! It would be half., if even...and, the level of ‘care’, for those, would be unthinkable.

> Hospitals everywhere run closer to capacity than you might think. “surges” aren’t built into their operating model.

I bet however a steady flow of non-citizens is ...

I notice most of these endless Coronavirus threads are mostly filled with conjecture by the posters. I swear, some of you people who are trying to push Coronavirus as some type of pandemic, sound just like Libs pushing Globull Warming! When ever people challenge your unverifiable pronouncements, you get even more hysterical and unhinged with your ridiculous dire warnings! Too bad the total number of deaths doesn’t come close to your unhinged hysteria! You fools are being played by our lying media!

We are witnessing the potential collapse
of our economy because 7,000+ people have died from a virus! This media induced hysteria has the potential to devastate our economy and our lives!

200 nurses furloughed over one patient?

Since all 200 had contact, how many of those are you willing to allow to wander around, without testing, and possibly infect more people at the hospital, especially older Americans that are dying off because of this virus at a much higher rate?

Yeah but if they aren't getting tested, and we know there are a ton, then we can assume they are not at the hospital using a bed.

You are correct.
And others best not disagree with the Death Wishers or you will be attacked.
Be careful. Take care of yourself & and family.
But quit hyping every idiot screaming
about beds, masks & bemoans. It’s hype.
I want this jackass in Conn. to tell me exactly how his hospital was overwhelmed by one corona patient. Then tell me why he mismanaged his hospital. Then tell me how this “proves” our hospitals are not equipped.
But they enjoy fear panic & death.
Let them sink in it.
This board has become nothing more than a rumor mill with conjecture, opinion & fear mongers replacing facts.
Shame.

“If I can test those nurses, I can potentially get them back into the game a lot sooner,” Lamont said Monday night

Negative tests do not rule out infection in asymptomatic persons. Whoever this Lamont character is, he's a dangerous idiot who should not be allowed out of the house.

Why can't they be tested?

Oh, they can be tested.

The issue is, can you or anyone else interpret a negative result? I'm board certified in Infectious Diseases and I can't. My State epidemiologist can't.

And I doubt this Lamaont character can.

Danbury Hospital, which he said was “at capacity.

We are supposedly not even at the peak and he makes this claim. Is this not fanning the fire? come on!

I believe that the ratio of teachers to administrators is probably similar to that graph with the number of administrators dwarfing the teachers.

I live in the Danbury area and I'm very familiar with Danbury Hospital, which is only about four or five miles from my home.

This is the first I've heard of this. So I would treat this report with skepticism until more facts come in. As of the moment, there are 41 reported cases of this virus statewide and zero deaths (so far). That is not nearly enough cases to overload Danbury Hospital, which is fairly large and by no means even the largest hospital in the area.

Is this just a liberal early wolf crier?

Listened to the head of a 26 county health system in Vermont and New Hampshire say that they were using LabCorp for testing. I think it's cover for the lack of preparation by some states and local communities.

I guess they did not know the patient had the virus. I can see that happening.

Sounds like the entire staff of nurses were expose to one patient. I bet only a few were expose to the patient and those few expose the others.

Danbury Hospital, which he said was “at capacity.

He was referring to staffing capacity, not patient capacity.
