Dr. Deborah Birx sweetly scolds the media for spreading panic
American Thinker ^ | 03/27/2020 | Andrea Widburg

There have been a few consistent points that many of those who post at American Thinker have been making. The main point is that the media are deliberately fomenting panic. They do this partly because that’s the nature of media (“if it bleeds it leads”) and partly because most members of America’s media are Trump haters. They would willingly send America into an economic nosedive if it meant routing Trump from the White House.

Still, another thing we’ve been highlighting here is that media members are innumerates. They glom onto whatever large, scary, Trump-injuring numbers come their way, and then they run with those numbers.

When it comes to coronavirus, American Thinker writers have been pointing out

DR. BIRX AT HER BEST

Birx scolded the media for buying into each extremist prediction or computer model:

I'm going to say something that is a little bit complicated but do it in a way we can understand it together. In the model, either you have to have a large group of people who a-asymptomatic, who never presented for any test to have the kind of numbers predicted. To get to 60 million people infected, you have to have a large group of a-symptomatics. We have not seen an attack rate over 1 in 1,000. So either we are measuring the iceberg and underneath it, are a large group of people. So we are working hard to get the antibody test and figure out who these people are and do they exist. Or we have the transmission completely wrong.

So these are the things we are looking at, because the predictions of the model don't match the reality on the ground in China, South Korea or Italy. We are five times the size of Italy. If we were Italy and did all those divisions, Italy should have close to 400,000 deaths. They are not close to achieving that.

Models are models. We are -- there is enough data of the real experience with the coronavirus on the ground to really make these predictions much more sound. So when people start talking about 20% of a population getting infected, it's very scary, but we don't have data that matches that based on our experience.

Having explained to the innumerates in the press that (as we’ve said here) the available numbers aren’t coherent enough to justify hysterical reporting, Birx then gently criticized the media’s fear-mongering about resources, such as hospital beds and ventilators:

And the situation about ventilators. We are reassured in meeting with our colleagues in New York that there are still I.C.U. Beds remaining and still significant -- over 1,000 or 2,000 ventilators that have not been utilized.

Please for the reassurance of people around the world, to wake up this morning and look at people talking about creating DNR situations, Do Not Resuscitate situations for patients, there is no situation in the United States right now that warrants that kind of discussion. You can be thinking about it in the hospital. Certainly, hospitals talk about this on a daily basis, but to say that to the American people and make the implication that when they need a hospital bed it's not going to be there or a ventilator, it's not going to be there, we don't have evidence of that.

It's our job collectively to assure the American people, it's our job to make sure that doesn't happen. You can see the cases are concentrated in highly urban areas and there are other parts of the states that have lots of ventilators and other parts of New York state that don't have any infected. We can meet the needs by being responsive.

Brix and Fauci have a lot more patience than I would. I was trained under the old “adversarial system”. When someone attacks you medically (another doctor) you rip into him. It helps to be able to point out how his criticism is full of crap. If one couldn’t do that one didn’t survive long. Others would conclude that you didn’t actually know what you are doing.

It’s naive to think a scolding by anyone matters. MSM is all in with the DNC to make this as bad as possible. Thank God Trump can see this.

Yeah - there are just TONS of ventilators available. That’s why major health systems are writing policies like these..

Also, Dr. Birx referred to models created by British experts indicating that up to 500,000 Brits could die from the virus.  Now they have readjusted their number of dead to 20,000.  That is a 25-fold drop.  In those models, they estimated up to 2.2 million deaths in America, with over 60 million infected (20%).  Dr. Birx indicated that the data (now substantial since 550,000 tests have been done) do not justify these fearsome numbers.  She further indicated that there are no data to support frightening claims by Mayor Bill de Blasio that up to 50% of New Yorkers would be infected.

The data show that analysis should not be generalized throughout the nation.  Instead, we need look at hotspots as individual spread curves.  She indicated that areas of concern include Chicago and Detroit.  We see a spike in New Orleans as a result of the Mardi Gras celebrations with many vacationers.  Soon another spike may occur in the northeast because of spring break vacationers.  Preventing travel seeding appears most critical.

Further work on vaccines and treatment modalities discussed by Dr. Fauci means that production of these items will proceed simultaneous to positive scientific studies.  So should a seasonal cycle appear next fall, we will be ahead of the virus.  All of this gives hope.

“Brix and Fauci have a lot more patience than I would.”

Did you miss the little fit Fauci threw a couple days ago when a reporter asked him a question he didn’t like? He has NO patience, and he isn’t used to have his wonderfulness questioned, even subtly. He was glorying in being the star of these briefings, and didn’t know they’d turn on him. Later, he apologized.

In my day if somebody criticized you and you couldn’t leave them skin flayed with blood streaming with 15 reasons they were full of crap. Your peers would start a campaign to have you removed. It indicated you were dangerous to patients.

“It’s naive to think a scolding by anyone matters.”

It does when it comes from experts whose opinions matter and who the media KNOWS matter to the American people. The media may call Trump a liar about what he may say about the Chinese virus, treatment, projections, etc but they cannot and will not go after an expert with the credentials of this Doctor.

LOL, but what you linked to is precisely what Dr Birx alluded to. The data sets being used are WRONG and it is the faulty data which is leading to all the panic and hysteria.

Will there EVER be a case where a Hospital finds it needs a respirator and doesn’t have one available? Sure, this can and has happened before in all sorts of situations. But it’s anecdotal.

Show me where NOW people are dying because of a lack of ventilators?
