Ethanol Producers Want FDA to Ease Restrictions So They Can Supply Hand Sanitizer

(DES MOINES, Iowa) — As hospitals and nursing homes desperately search for hand sanitizer amid the coronavirus outbreak, federal regulators are preventing ethanol producers from providing millions of gallons of alcohol that could be transformed into the germ-killing mixture.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s roadblock has been frustrating the health care and ethanol industries, which have been calling for a relaxed regulation to deal with the public health care emergency.

“Hand sanitizer is a big part of our lives,” said Eric Barber, CEO of Mary Lanning Healthcare, a hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. “We can’t get any. We order it and it’s just not available.”

The problem for the ethanol industry is that most plants make food-grade ethanol, one step below the highest pharmaceutical grade. But since the plants aren’t certified to comply with stringent production standards designed to protect quality of medicines, food ingredients and dietary supplements, the FDA doesn’t want the alcohol used for a product to be applied to the skin.

hand sanitizer dries out the skin leaces it dry cracked and chapped. soap and water are better to use and cheaper.

Since we’re pumping max gas or oil. Why do we need ethanol now? Let’s grow edible food instead. Probably better for car motors too if we stopped

Yes, and when you mix 75% Everclear 190 with 25% aloe vera, you end up with a hand sanitizer that’s 71% alcohol. Some people suggest 1/3 aloe vera, which with Everclear 190 creates a hand sanitizer that’s 63% alcohol, which meets the CDC’s requirement to be a minimum of 60% alcohol.

:Be careful with constant skin exposure to isopropyl alcohol. While the aloe vera is supposed to help with skin irritation, there is a toxicity issue with isopropyl alcohol with constant body exposure to it."

So I don't die from Covid-19, my hands rot off from using rubbing alcohol? Since Puerell is unavailable, we've been using isopopyl alcohol (same alcohol in Purell) then some hand lotion to negate the drying effects. My hands have never been smoother. Is this a delayed reaction?

By the time a person is ready for some Everclear, he’s too drunk to walk; so a drive-thru makes good sense.

The Democrat thugs who run the EPA will be doing anything possible to heighten the economic destruction for political reasons.

Sounds like a damn good reason for the President to deonate it with an EO.

Had graduated from people “whuffing” spay solvent in the wal-mart, if i recall correctly. Inhaling ethanol, well there could be a flammability factor if some fool is around on exhaling.... near a cig lighter or other flame source.

Fuel/air.... etc.

“You can buy Everclear?”

Oh yes. I think it may be the official state beverage of North Dakota.

“my need for Everclear makes it so a liter bottle lasts quite a long time, well over a year.”

What proof is Everclear - 180? 190?

What we have is Everclear 190. Not all states can sell it.

We bought a huge bottle (sorry, I have no concept of what sizes of bottles liquor comes in) to make hand sanitizer, should our other supplies (of sanitizer) run short.

Yes. That’s what we bought.

Huge bottle, that has a handle.

I have no idea what that size is called.

“ 950 ml Bottle of 99+% Pure Isopropyl Alcohol Industrial Grade”

If you look at the ingredient list it will probably list something like SDA 38F. The SDA translates to Specially Denatured Alcohol. If you drink it, you aren’t going to enjoy the experience, but it won’t kill you. Too much alcohol, of course, will kill you.

The Denaturants are used to render ethyl alcohol non-consumable.

That should make a few bottles of hand sanitizer, right? 😂

Probably. Kind of an expensive hand sanitizer. In our case, it would be emergency only for that need. I actually use Everclear 190 for a DIY spray deodorant (w/essential oils). It’s the only reason we have a bottle of it.
