Why Are Republicans and Democrats So Divided Over the Coronavirus?
Townhall.com ^ | March 29, 2020 | Wayne Allyn Root

Obviously, we are a very badly divided nation: so divided we agree on virtually nothing; so divided we can't even talk to one another anymore; so divided one side doesn't believe in anything the other side says; so divided California, New York and Illinois might as well be on a different planet than Texas.

We can't even agree on how to respond to the novel coronavirus, and when to get back to business.

Check out the latest Rasmussen poll. Sixty-one percent of Republicans believe America will rise from the dead by Easter. Count me among them.

But only 41% of all likely voters somewhat believe the USA can get back to work by Easter. Among Democrats, the number must be in the teens.

In the past few days, President Donald Trump made it abundantly clear that Americans need to get back to work.

I have said repeatedly on my nationally syndicated radio show: "The business of America is business. It's time to get back to work because the deadly virus is temporary, but the economic disaster we're causing could last a lifetime and prove far more deadly in the long run."

Many conservatives such as myself have also pointed out that the mortality rates of the coronavirus have been greatly exaggerated. On Thursday, Dr. Deborah Birx, "America's Doctor," said the same thing in a press conference: There will not be millions dead in the USA. The math doesn't add up.

She reported how computer models predicting 500,000 dead in the U.K. have been downgraded to 20,000. She reported how the terrible death count in Italy just doesn't add up to millions of Americans dead, not even close.

President Trump and Republican businessmen like me remain steadfast and optimistic that we can start bringing this terrible pandemic to a close and be back to business (or at least a limited business rollout) by Easter.

It's not because we don't take this pandemic seriously but because we believe in our hearts that we can't allow the U.S. economy to die. We can't allow another Great Depression. We can't honor the sick or dying by losing our job, income and life savings.

Someone has to mind the store, keep the economy going, pay the bills and pay the taxes so that after we win this war -- and we will win -- there is something for the older, the weak and the vulnerable to come back to.

We believe in our hearts and souls there is a way to restart this economy and to do it carefully, reasonably and responsibly while protecting the oldest, weakest and most vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Democratic politicians and liberal Hollywood activists scream about millions dying and about keeping the nation locked down for months. And they call Trump and Republicans all kinds of terrible names.

What accounts for this difference? I believe I've figured it out. It's all about personality.

Most every Republican I know is positive, outgoing and relentless, won't take no for an answer and has can-do spirit. That's why so many Republicans are successful in the business world. That's why we're proud to create the jobs and pay the taxes. We are the workers, makers and producers of America. We turn lemons into lemonade. We see the glass as half full, not half empty. We love working. We see it as our American way of life. We desperately want and need to get back to work.

Democrats are the polar opposite. They are cynical, negative and always finding fault with America, capitalism and business. That's why conservative talk radio is so successful whereas there is virtually no liberal talk radio. It's just too negative, too dark, too depressing. Liberals are always complaining, offering no solutions other than bigger government.

That explains the differences in how we see the coronavirus. Republicans have everything to lose if they don't get back to work. We see our business, career, job as our calling in life, our baby. It is who we are. Taking that away from us is like death.

Democrats are made up of groups who don't see anything to gain by rushing back to work. Some of them didn't work before this crisis. Some are protected by union contracts and union pensions. Some work for the government -- and they have jobs for life. Some have lived on a welfare check for much of their life. Some want to be paid bigger checks for being unemployed than for working. In the end, they feel they can stay home, take no risk and have the government pay them.

It's a completely different mindset. Democrats depend on government. Republicans depend on God, prayer, self-reliance and personal responsibility. Our lives are wrapped up in our work. We're risk-takers. We must get back to work or risk losing everything we've worked our whole lives to build. It's what makes us who we are.

Yes, we're a divided nation. It's like we're from different planets. I'm proud to be from the planet where the glass is always half full, where America, with the greatest health care system in the world and the strongest economy in the world, will always prove victorious.

Yes, it's true that "the business of America is business." Let the people who want to get back to it get back to it.

I tend to agree with you.

Someone I am very close to, is so anti-Trump, she has stopped saying she loves me.

My sister, was a rabid anti-Trumper, but she went to Mass every day, worked {for free} in a prison, and she always said she loved me, even though we had extreme divergent views on politics.

When she died and had the final Mass, the warden allowed over 100 prisoners to attend her Funeral Mass.

I never saw any thing like it.

She was a good woman, but she was irrational when it came to Trump, and nothing logical would change her view.

I'd like to know her opinion today {if souls in Heaven know or care what is happening on earth}.

I busted my ass to get two whiny snowflakes through debt free to a degree- Yes they were forced to work and save, apply for aid but I did the heavy lifting. I even spent an all expense paid trip to SA for 5 months in 1990-91 when snowflake 2 was still in utero. I am convinced current situation is so far gone snowflake 2 would rat me out to send me to a re education camp in order to improve social credit score. Big friction source with my wife is I have cut them out of my financial planning. BTW son is doing well definitely not whiny snowflake-

Covid19 is no different than the WOT. It is a example of government overreach and reactionary behavior. We must give up our freedoms and that there is a terrorist under every bed scenario. That is covid. It is evident that politicians will simply spend money to fix the problems at hand. They fail to use plans and come up with ideas that create less problems for our actual citizens than what they offer.

A Republican could make a fool of himself on the issue and Republicans would not only defend him but subscribe to that folly.

I believe the AGW crap belied that opinion. Some Republicans believed it and stated so; they were soundly castigated by fellow Republicans.

I have to disagree with you, spetznaz.

There is no moral equivalency in this legislation, nor in what has been going on in this country since 1/20/2017...never mind since around 1990.

For the last two or three decades I have paid particular attention to what Leftists (committed Democrat voters and politicians) have wreaked on this country, and there is no moral equivalence between the two.

Surely, those on the right have proposed and passed things that have been bad for this country, done things that we disagree with or may even be openly stupid, but theirs amounts to a mole hill while the Left amounts to a mountain. The most evil things the Republican politicians have done is to go along and vote with Leftists instead of fighting when they should have done so.

Look at what was done with the Mueller Probe and impeachment, and now this relief bill. The biggest thing I saw from Democrats when they were threatening to block the bill was that they were angry that all kinds of Leftist crap they thought should be in there were not.

When they had their chance to add, they put in things like $25 million for the Kennedy Center, money to be used “assist migrants and refugees” ($350 million), unprecedented collective bargaining powers for unions, increased fuel emissions standards for airlines, and Expansion of wind and solar tax credits.

None of that has anything to do with the Coronavirus. But they shoved those things in, and forced a fight to get a whole ‘‘American Coronavirus/COVID–19 Election Safety and Security” or ‘‘ACCESS” Act that she proposed removed.

This section would impose requirements on states for early voting, voting by mail, required mailing of absentee ballots to everyone, ballot harvesting (i.e., having third parties deliver absentee ballots), online voter registration, same-day registration and other practices which undermine confidence in the integrity of the ballot. In these days of increasing threats to election security we should be moving rapidly back to in-person paper ballots, but this bill would be a radical step in the wrong direction.

And then Pelosi lied about it. Just lied. Openly lied. They had her on video maintaining “There is nothing in this bill that does not have to do with Coronavirus. Nothing.” And she said it repeatedly.

These Democrats are not people who want to fix a crisis, these are people who are desperately grasping for power and political advantage in a time of national crisis.

I think it has more to do with unfamiliarity with mathematics.

Because leftists are saboteurs during wartime and should be treated as traitors were in WWII.

“Desperate people do desperate things”!!! The Democrat Party is dying, their Media is dying,.....Joe Biden is finished, he belongs in an old age home with his wife, Jill serving him chicken soup!!! New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo is a nothing but a “BS” Bitcher, who did absolutely nothing but piss NY State money away on illegal immigrants, rather then to use Taxpayer, funds to prepare for a rainy day.

Trump will make mince meat out all of these Democrat low life, traitors and turncoats. And, if not...I can assure you America the nation republic, will die rather quickly, I hate to say this...but, I am glad that my wife and are “over-the-hill” and that we won’t be witness to the destruction of the greatest country in the world!!! American voters...it is simply your choice and your future!!!
