I like to make fun of the French as much as the next guy but they really have been very good at times.

Nope. The farthest I’d go is a hearty handshake.

It was French who stormed redoubt number 9 with unloaded guns and fixed bayonets that began the end of the British at Yorktown.

Interesting but statistically meaningless. Still, if in Bear country, I’d carry.

It’s personal not personnel.

And I have many more. Even several from my military days. But let’s look at what statistics we actually have, vice personal stories:

https://www.thoughtco.com/hunting-accident-rates-127877

“According to the International Hunter Education Association, in an average year, fewer than 1,000 people in the United States and Canada are accidentally shot by hunters, and of these, fewer than 75 are fatalities. In many cases, these fatalities are self-inflicted by hunters who trip, fall, or have other accidents that cause them to shoot themselves with their own weapons.”

http://infomory.com/numbers/number-of-bear-attacks-per-year/

“Every year there are less than 30 bear attacks that occur in the United States. This is according to the Internal Association for Bear Research and Management. From 1900 to 2003 107 fatal bear attacks have been recorded in North America. This translates to about 1 fatality arising from bear attacks per year.”

Weapons deserve our respect. So do bears. However, if a bear tries to harm a person, I’m all in favor of exterminating it. A loaded, chambered weapon with the safety off is dangerous.

To give the Statistics fair accounting one has to eliminate accidents the occur out side of bear country.

Then only use those that occur in bear country.

It is kind like saying your more likely to get hit by lighting then attacked by a bear.

It is all dependent on where you are at.

https://gunwatch.blogspot.com/2018/06/bears-or-lightning-which-is-more-deadly.html

The same holds true for firearms in AK your more likely to be attacked by a bear then injured in an self inflicted firearms accident caused by not having the safety on.

That is what we are talking about not all firearm accidents.

I firmly believe in carrying firearms with their safety devices activated.

But the majority of firearms accidents are cause by human error not a mechanical problem.

Someone on FR posted a list of which handguns were used to kill bears in Alaska. The list was compiled by some state agency.

The gun (cartridge) most used is the 9mm Luger. I suspect that is just because that is the most carried.

When you get into which pistol caliber is best, you then have to determine load, bullet etc.

My guess is any revolver caliber in .357, .41mag, .44mag, and .45 Colt. would do the job, assuming hot load with best class bullets.

I am not counting the other powerhouses simply because very few carry .454 Casull etc. If you can handle the big .50 S&W, then of course it would work. I have never fired one and looking at it’s ballistics I don’t want to.

One of the best guns I ever owned was a model 27 with 8 and 3/8ths inch barrel. Target trigger, target hammer and target grips.

I imagine in that big “N” frame, you could load the .357 to approach .44 mag power. Loaded with 158 grain hard cast Keith style semi wad cutters. It would kill about everything.

Actual if you read the study linked at the beginning of this thread you would know the 44mag is the most common caliber used.

I did read it but do not think it is a well done study.

I am sure the one done by the state said 9mm, mainly because it surprised me. Frankly I would not want to face a brown bear with a 9mm but that is what they said.

I would be very interested if you could ref the state study.

I do not think the state has do think the state has done such a study.

Even thro a couple of brown bears have been killed by 9mmL’s

How would you improve the study?
