U.S. carmaker Ford backtracked Tuesday on its plans to reopen multiple key automotive plants in the United States in two weeks -- a move that drew concern from union workers over the ongoing coronavirus emergency.
The automaker said last week it planned to reopen plants in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Kansas City, Mo., on April 14, and a plant in Mexico a week earlier. The United Auto Workers union responded with alarm, saying it had "great concern" about the plan due to the ongoing coronavirus threat.
Tuesday, Ford said it's postponed the plans.
"The health and safety of our workforce, dealers, customers, partners and communities remains our highest priority," said Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford North America. "We are working very closely with union leaders -- especially the [United Auto Workers] -- to develop additional health and safety procedures aimed at helping keep our workforce safe and healthy."
"Today's decision by Ford is the right decision for our members, their families and our nation," UAW International President Rory Gamble responded Tuesday. He added that the union is working with Ford to make sure "all members are safe, and our communities are protected from this spreading pandemic."

I’m sure Ford has other reasons to do this — like a collapse in auto sales, for example.
UAW guys being UAW guys. They want to continue being paid to sit around for as long as possible.
Trust a union member to avoid work wherever possible.
Unions are sticking it to Trump.
Can’t go to the dealership. Who wants to buy a car online?
They are also sticking it to the American people. Somethings never change though. Unions had their place, about 100 years ago.
Honda was one of the first companies to announce the closure of their plants a few weeks ago. In the U.S. they are a UAW company, and they were very open about why they did it: They simply saw a huge decline in demand for new cars in the U.S.
After the video of biden slagging off the uaw worker I think the rank and file go with Trump.
Well, they'll love it when other companies, even other countries, get that business. If they can deal with this now, they're done.
Keep the Mexico factory closed and open one more in the US.
People are out of work so they’re not in the market for a new car. Bring back all those clunkers obamy crushed.
UAW guys being UAW guys.
They’ve done more to hurt the American auto industry than anyone.
Meanwhile, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai keep going.
Union Against Working
Leave it to the unions. If there’s a chance of progress anywhere, they’ll be sure to get in the way.
A good friend of mine ordered a small 2-Series BMW to be built in Germany and shipped here. About 10 days ago the status was listed as "In transit". I can't keep but wondering if the car will arrive in the US and he'll be locked down and can't go it!
In Kentucky the previous Governor actually tried to fix the VERY broken pension system. The teacher's union got in the way and he lost his re-election bid.
“union’s safety concerns”
BS. The real reasons: Up to 4 months full pay to not work. Stay out and slow the recovery with the potential to hurt Trump. This serves as a reminder as to why the Unions are held in such contempt. That bill will help some that really need it but as with any Govt. program, more harm than good.
"As of Feb 28, 2020, the average annual pay for the UAW jobs category in Michigan is $46,266 a year. While ZipRecruiter is seeing annual salaries as high as $54,795 and as low as $35,508, the majority of salaries within the UAW jobs category currently range between $38,576 (25th percentile) to $52,603 (75th percentile) in Michigan. "
I lived in Michigan and had UAW guys as neighbors. Plus my late father-in-law was UAW. They get sub-pay on top of their unemployment benefits which can add up to as much as 95% of their normal earnings. They treat layoffs like extended paid vacations. When one is coming guys with the most seniority demand to be laid-off first. Twisted economic thinking.
Thank you for that point of view from, I presume, Richmond, Virginia.
Have you ever lived in Michigan? Ever had a UAW member in the family?
If not, I regard your opinion accordingly.
