I hope the cultural shift that does NOT occur is that we all become a nation of cowering germophobes.
This is a 100 year event. Sad, tragic, but unavoidable. This sort of thing happens on a regular cycle.
I would not be so sure about the "unavoidable." A lot of direct blame rests squarely on the People's Republic of China and their gross mismanagement and outright lies at the outset of this bug. Peripheral blame lays on those who have fostered lax border management and so called "free" trade policies with China.
Whether this was engineered in a Chinese research lab or spontaneously arose in a wet market, this thing could have largely been avoided or heavily mitigated into a regional nuisance instead of a global pandemic.
