“FBI numbers account for 3,740,688 background checks last month, shattering the record of 3,314,594, set in December 2015; the only other time NICS checks crossed the three million threshold for a single month.”

Wheee! More guns in the hands of Good Guys and Patriots!

Be afraid, Mother Government. Be VERY afraid. ;)

Liberal newsrags in Hawaii are wringing their greasy hands over the massive sales. They cannot comprehend how this can be happening in their deep blue empire.

At 36 million a year, it’s going to take 10 years to get everyone a new gun.

The number of background checks would be even higher if the stores had firearms to sell.

I know firsthand of delayed orders from just prior to the shutdown.

Loudly tout the mass release of criminals from jail and this is the result. Seems a lot more Americans are realizing they, not the government, are responsible for their own self protection.

For example, a check is conducted on the person, not the gun. Also, a person can buy more than one gun on passing a check, so the number of checks may be far below the number of guns sold.

Not quite. The form 4473 includes the serial number(s) of the purchase AND the identity of the purchaser. It is the purchaser whose background is being checked by the NICS but the number of firearms is certainly known. Nor need that purchase be an entire firearm - purchase of an AR stripped lower receiver requires a background check.
