Your immune system becomes so compromised with chemo how in the hell will your body heal itself if surgery is AFTER chemo!!
One part of the answer is that the chemo cocktail gets modified in preparation for surgery. Specifically, the ingredient that inhibits the formation of new vascular structures is removed from the chemo. Another part of the answer is that the patient must wait sufficiently long for the chemo itself to leave the body; perhaps 3 to six weeks. Finally, specific drugs are added which encourage the rebuilding of the immune system.
So, there are specific steps taken to permit surgery after some chemo has been given. But are there steps one can take to permit the lack of chemo after surgery?
So my question remains; is surgery ever the last step in cancer therapy? I know it wasn't in mine. I was on a targetted drug for over four years.
