I think it more likely that pharmaceuticals such as generic ranitidine are made in India and China where there are not infrequent contaminants introduced during their manufacturing processes.
Time to shift at least drug manufacturing back to the US. Quality control in China especially has always been a problem. They want to cut corners. I know a chemist that used to travel to China several times a year to ensure food processors quality met standards as folks there would try to get away with things they didn’t think would matter. Enough is enough.
