I don't think it was any worse in Spain. It's just that Spain was neutral in WW I so didn't have wartime censorship.

Also I saw on some TV show that figured the Spanish flu was actually from China, came to Britain and France through hired workers and then around the world.

Well then you saw the wrong tv show... The source was established through research. American troops were the first to start showing 'Spanish Flu' symptoms and they took it to Europe when then went over to fight in World War 1. It's pretty well documented and accepted research.

Spanish flu Timeline... April 1918 First mention of influenza appears in an April 5 weekly public health report. The report informs officials of 18 severe cases and three deaths in Haskell, Kansas.
