Trump Keeps Talking. Some Republicans Don't Like What They're Hearing.
The NY Times via Yahoo! News ^ | April 10, 2020 | by Jonathan Martin and Maggie Haberman, The New York Times

WASHINGTON - In his daily briefings on the coronavirus, President Donald Trump has brandished all the familiar tools in his rhetorical arsenal: belittling Democratic governors, demonizing the media, trading in innuendo and bulldozing over the guidance of experts.

It’s the kind of performance the president relishes but one that has his advisers and Republican allies worried.

As unemployment soars and the death toll skyrockets, and new polls show support for the president’s handling of the crisis sagging, White House allies and Republican lawmakers increasingly believe the briefings are hurting the president more than helping him. Many view the sessions as a kind of original sin from which all of his missteps flow, once he gets through his prepared script and turns to his preferred style of extemporaneous bluster and invective.

Trump “sometimes drowns out his own message,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who has become one of the president’s informal counselors and told him “a once-a-week show” could be more effective. Rep. Susan Brooks of Indiana said “they’re going on too long.” Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said the briefings were “going off the rails a little bit” and suggested that he should “let the health professionals guide where we’re going to go.”

Even the conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board chastised the president for his behavior at the briefings. “COVID-19 isn’t shifty Schiff,” it wrote in an editorial Thursday, using Trump’s nickname for Rep. Adam Schiff. “It’s a once-a-century threat to American life and livelihood.”

With only intermittent attempts to adapt to a moment of crisis, Trump is effectively wagering that he can win reelection in the midst of a national emergency on a platform of polarization.

New York Times and I are so close that they know what I am thinking.

Isn’t it wonderful.

If they knew what WE ARE REALLY FEELING...perhaps, their phony self-love would come to a halt.

They think we are STILL IN AWE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES...

Not since “Three Days of the Condor,” you pathetic goofs.

The exact same thing happened with me. The first general thing I liked was he outed the idiotic mindset of the left.

Making TDS an actual thing has brought down a lot of people that, before Trump, were able to hide their crazy political ideas.

You know I see Trump speak and I get encouraged then I read stuff like your posting(not criticizing since you were quoting) and I’m reminded of the movie 10 commandments. Everytime Moses would say something positive, Dathan would rise up to put doubt and fear into peoples minds. The Bible itself records several such incidents

Yeah, that's total fear porn. Trump beat the Bushes and the Clintons by ignoring the "experts." He's the only politician who genuinely understands modern messaging, particularly cutting through a hostile media.

I am a Republican and I admire him even more. Does that count for anything or is the NYT only interested in RINOs and neverTrumpers?

You’ve got to understand, we’re not going anywhere, and hardcore libs will never support him, so these pressers are going for the middle who are constantly bombarded with “Orange Man Bad” pronouncements from the media. The pressers still show Trump’s tough side with his entanglements with the media, but also his deference (probably not all bought in, but he publicly supports them like a leader should and probably gives them hell behind closed doors) to medical “professionals” (an early criticism by the media that said he wouldn’t do) and he’s showing his love for Americans and the country. My wife and I listen to the pressers everyday, It is very informative to combat the mid/disinformation that’s out there.

My wife and enjoy it for the same reasons.

It’s like he’s saying, “Let me punch you a few more times for such stupidity. Here’s a few more punches because you need them, too.”

The press briefings are the best live thing on our television screen, and the content isn’t tweaked by liberals.

Did Tom dascle write this as the nyt seems concerned. Translation the daily briefing show president Trump to be an exceptionally good leader, incredibly bright and good in a crisis. These have converted many into believing we are lucky to have him right now.

They do go on too long. I don’t even bother watching. Just wait for the highlight clips of the President releasing the salvos later. Trump or no Trump, it’s all bullship anyway.
