Hundreds of absentee ballots mailed back to the City of Madison for Tuesday's election may not be counted, thanks to a missing postmark.
The problem is one that is emerging in communities across Wisconsin as election officials prepare to tally the results of an election conducted during the coronavirus pandemic.
During a Friday meeting of the bipartisan state Elections Commission, Democrats tried to have more absentee ballots counted, but Republicans said they had little ability to do that because of the U.S. Supreme Court decision.
The commissioners unanimously agreed to count absentee ballots that arrived after election day that were stamped with a certain circular postmark if the U.S. Postal Service provides a written statement saying that postmark was used only on election day.
But Democrats said the commission should count a broader set of absentee ballots, including all of those that arrived Wednesday because they would have been in the mail by election day.
In many cases postmarks are nothing more than “decorative stamps” that don’t provide information about when mail was processed, said Ann Jacobs, one of the Democratic commissioners.
“How many people are we going to disenfranchise for a decorative stamp vs. actually having put their ballot in on time?” she said. “Those votes ought to be being counted.”
But the commission’s Republican chairman, Dean Knudson, said the commission had to go by what the Supreme Court said about postmarks.

On The Five the other day I heard Juan Williams state that mail in voting was more secure than voting in person. How he says some of the things he does with a straight face is beyond me.
The ever so Democrat RINO Governor of Maryland so decreed yesterday that our primary will be 100% mail in.
Thus by rampant cheating and dishonesty guaranteeing an even stronger leftist stranglehold on the state.
After we donated to Trump and started receiving Trump mail we began having delivery problems with our mail. The problem stopped after contacting our Critter’s office.
But I’ve been wondering for a whole now if Trump donors have more problems with mail delivery than other USPS customers...
Cheating all over the state via absentee ballots. This is the plan for November too. Why would the state of Wisconsin need over a million absentee ballots? Absentee ballots are for elderly, disabled, or someone who has to be gone Election Day only.
Democrat fraud has to stop.
Go to the polls. Open more of them if you need to or do early voting with voter ID.

The postman delivering all those ballots missing postmarks was probably driving a unmarked vehicle with an old “Hillary for President” bumper sticker on it.
This is a disaster waiting to happen.
The post office routinely sends mail without postmarking it. I get tons of it all the time, even with uncanceled stamps.
If they're relying on the postal service to handle the elections, we are in deep doo-doo.
I get mail with no postmark all the time. Sometimes the stamps aren’t even cancelled.
All the mail in MI now comes through Detoilet and it takes 2x as long to get everything screwed up.
What a CF. This is why I vote in person, even though I am eligible for a mail ballot. The only people that should be using a mail ballot are people who cannot physically get to the polls. I vote on election day so no one can cheat by getting the early voting numbers before election day and finding a way to massage them. I check my registration 90 and 30 days before election day so there are no surprises when I get to the polls. All this takes less than 30 minutes out of my life.

Yes, if they are too stupid to mail their ballot oh, they are too stupid to vote. Actually what I think happened is someone dropped off a few boxes of marked ballots I never mailed them at all. Pure fraud.
No kidding. Juan seems like a really nice guy, loving grandfather, and great gardener. But when it comes to politics oh, he seems quite confused. And just wrong.
