A Drexel University student has filed a class action lawsuit against the college demanding a refund for tuition and other fees for the Spring 2020 semester that was disrupted by the COVID-19 outbreak.
Grainger Rickenbacker, the filing plaintiff, is a full-time student at Drexel University and hails from South Carolina. He asserts that he and other students paid for services that were not delivered by their school. The form of those payments were tuition costs and other related expenses.

If he continued accessing school work and class lectures online then hes lost hope of his argument standing up.
Hey, this is the education system’s chance to show they don’t rip off students!
I would suggest he find an alternative because he will not be welcome on campus.
Congress will have to pass a law immunizing companies and organizations from lawsuits with regard to the virus or our economy will die from the fear of lawsuits. We did this in Y2K, we need to do it now. If not, no company will open back up in fear that they will be liable.
In this specific case, the colleges should offer expanded online classes or rebates for extra classes. They had to pay for the staff, they did not make money on the early closing. I think they can give back room and board fees. But not education if they did not benefit form the closure. Its a force major (act of God). Which means it could not be helped and everyone takes the risk.
Not really, he probably pays fees for the Student Union, clubs, intramural sports, gym, cafe, possibly other campus life stuff that he was unable to use. All the things that he could not use should be at least partially refunded to him.
“I would suggest he find an alternative because he will not be welcome on campus.”
Why? Most students despise thieving college administrators. The student might be named chancellor/big kahuna by student proclamation.
Students are realizing higher education is grossly overpriced and degrees can be obtained online.
Can I have a refund of my property taxes that goes toward the schools as well?
The educrats would go ballistic!!
Just imagine the amount of lawsuits are coming around the bend. I do feel for the kid, I must say.
In my area, it took a bunch of students complaining to the media to get one local college to at least refund a prorated amount for room and board that they were not going to be using.
Force majeure?
It is a case of Force Majeure. Not sure how to really deal with it. These stop gap spending bills are not going to be very effective imo. Just piling on debt for the future. It’s not imo going to cause any inflation with the GDP contracting 30%-40% this year. But we will have to pay for it. A better solution would be some kind of “suspension” of obligations, and reimburse from the top down (banks->landlords->renters).
But even that only covers real estate. Covering all the tuition, another matter. Covering lost pay, yet more still. States are all going to cry for lost sales tax and income tax. Federal income taxes will be way off. This whole thing may cost us $8 trillion by the time all is said and done.
A company I work with was acquired by a larger company with a lot of exposure to the food and restaurant business. They laid off 20% of their workforce and had to write down 15% of their accounts receivables because so many of their customers can’t or won’t pay, and may never re-open. They won’t be reporting a profit, or paying bonuses etc.
There is something to that. Imagine the decreased expenses of shut down schools. The lights are out. The heat(or AC) is turned way down. The buses are sitting still(think bus drivers, Fuel, maintenance not needed). The millions spent on high school foot ball and other sports are not being spent. Supplies are not being used. Even if you still pay the teachers and staff(most of them not even working) then they are still saving millions of dollars. And yet they will probably ask for even more money during the next tax season.
I personally think that all those savings should be deducted from the next school tax bill.
I was just thinking about that on my way back from the bank, where I stood in line for an hour to get inside.
How many people will be unable to make their property tax payments this year? What are the repercussions? States going to file liens, bank loans will be in technical default etc.
68% graduation rate. ......
“If he continued accessing school work and class lectures online then hes lost hope of his argument standing up.”
Even if he didn’t access the online system he is still out of luck. The university provided a online workaround based on their website. Improvise, adapt and overcome.
Speaking of property taxes, I received this is my email today. This pertains to the state of AZ.
COVID-19 UPDATE #3
Treasurer Royce Flora continues his commitment and push for the Legislature to extend the delinquent date to pay 2019 property taxes and to waive all penalties and interest. Treasurer Flora has sent formal requests to the Legislature and the Governor to call a Special Session to address the extension and the waiver. Unfortunately, as of this date, the Legislature still has not acted and the Governor has yet to respond.
Many legislators, including Senate President Karen Fann, have voiced support to get this done. But still no real action; more need to step up and do it.
This is really a simple fix that will help relieve some financial stress that so many of our citizens are feeling at this time of crisis, trying to provide for their families and put food on the table or pay taxes, Treasurer Flora says. There is still time for the Legislature to do this, but time is running out.
As stated in the April 6th letter to the Governor, the extension will in no way negatively impact any of the scheduled disbursements to school districts, fire districts, or any special districts. All 15 County Treasurers (have joined Treasurer Royce Flora and) agree that the disbursements will proceed as planned. But all 15 also agree that this extension will give (critically needed) relief to many homeowners who are being negatively impacted by this pandemic.
As a citizen/taxpayer you can also have influence in this issue. Please contact your legislator and/or the Governor and voice your opinion. Make your voice heard.
Senate President Karen Fann 602-926-5874
Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers 602-926-3128
Governor Doug Ducey 602-542-4331
With great respect,
Royce T. Flora
Maricopa County Treasurer
.
So sad. These students unable to meet with their friends and participate in school extracurricular activities during this national crisis. They cant even use the school study rooms. They have to study in their own homes. Heartbreaking!
Philly ping!
