The victim and his girlfriend told detectives they were walking west on 40th Street West when they noticed two men who appeared to be following them.

They allegedly stopped at one point to allow the men to pass, but the suspects also stopped.

“He said the suspect grabbed him by the throat and said, ‘This is how it’s gonna go down,’” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The victim told deputies he was afraid for his life and shot the other man once or twice.

All deer hunters know this. I have seen deer drop instantly and others run 100-200 yards with a clean kill shot in heart. Never know what’s going to happen. That’s also why typical stabbing victims have 30-50 stab wounds. Those fights go on for much longer than anyone would expect. Brutal.

And for every anecdote like that, there is a counter-anecdote. Plenty of stories like this where the shot man stayed put (DESPITE the victim also being shot and hobbled) and the non-shot man ran off clear.

A taxi driver told me he was on semi-permanent leave from the police force because he had been shot in he ankle by a criminal, high on drugs, who already had been shot with 00 buck. The criminal’s autopsy revealed both lungs and heart had been penetrated by the buckshot.

Well, if the intended victim is a woman, she never needs to actually fire her weapon, because the simple click-clacking noise of the round being chambered will surely scare that old meanie away. /sarc

That’s what I’ve been told anyway, way too many times.

“Because I was in fear of my life and only had six chambers.”

Or . . ."He didn't stop trying to kill me until the sixth shot." If you're in a jury trial, bring in the drug angle for their consideration, add: "Whatever he was on must have made him feel like Superman. For a few seconds I thought he was."

Uh Huh. That’s why, given the choice, one ought to pick the most effective tool fo r the situation. Maybe back then rifles/carbines were not acceptable. Too bad. More than one cop or good guy otherwise has been lost to the perp being able to deliver effective fires after being “killed”.

As far as the lesson in target vitality, please.

I completely disagree.
If the attacker has a weapon as well, your advice to assess first is the worst advice you can give. If you are being assaulted, wasting time to assess the obvious is a death sentence for you or anyone with you. Its the point of saying “I feared for my life” . Neutralize the threat.
If you can’t use it, don’t carry it.

Biden, and the anti civil rights sycophants in elected offices, and the enemedia would’ve rather seen the couple murdered. Never forget that.

My comment #24.

So, apparently, flashing your weapon never works, eh? Isn’t it partly the deterrent effect? Yes. People give up when they perceive a threat. That includes innocent people running from perps who flash guns OR knives, etc.

revealing your weapon (Brandishing) without using it, aside from being illegal, is THE STUPIDEST thing you can do when you conceal carry. anyone with any knowledge of guns would just laugh at that statement.
aka.. joe biden ... put that double-barreled shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house,”... look it up buddy.

the deterrent is an informed public that many many people conceal carry and you should get a real job and not try robbing or assaulting someone because you might get shot.

your other comment was indecipherable

I still think it’s nonsense that you HAVE to kill regardless. Maybe LEOs do, but I don’t buy it.

“Plenty of stories like this where the shot man stayed put (DESPITE the victim also being shot and hobbled) and the non-shot man ran off clear.”

Indecipherable? Refers to THIS very story where one perp stayed as is, the other ran away, despite the gun-toting vic getting shot himself (likely self-inflicted), thus more vulnerable.

Apparently using the gun w/o actually killing either of 2 perps still worked.

this isn’t TV here we’re talking about. this is a full on adrenaline blown attack mode fight or flight situation. life or death ...get it?

outside of sniper training you’re a fool if you think ANYONE, LEO or otherwise would ever waste time to contemplate shot placement.if you do ,your dead. even with training for hours and hours in a real world situations with thousands of examples from combat veterans and LEO’s you NEVER contemplate shot placement other than center mass. period.

My favorite from the old westerns is the GOOD GUY (White Hat-Palomino Horse) riding through the canyon with his 2 six shooters blazing, taking out the bad guys on the canyon top firing at him with rifles and the GG picking of 15 or 20 of them and nary a one hitting him.

Like ‘we’ used to say...who has time to count????

And one mentioned brandishing ... if you have wounded the ‘bad guy’ and he starts walking off or if he is just standing there and walking off, BAD IDEA to tell him to halt or shoot him while walking away....

YOU will be the one going to jail for either false imprisonment or ‘popping’ the perp when the ‘law’ decides he was leaving and the situation was diffused.

Which makes that old ‘knockout game’ the almost perfect crime.

You can’t shoot the guy just because he is walking towards you and if he ‘goes up alongside you head’ and keeps walking, you can’t shoot him as he is leaving.

Moral...if you draw it better ONLY to be to shoot and if you shoot better to put the clown out of his misery with as few rounds as possible.

You never know how a jury of your ‘peers’ is going to react to BOTH stories, no matter how right YOU may think you are or are.

Wish I had that thread where many people came out to argue against the “shoot to kill” belief.

Let me ask this...suppose you are attacked by someone with a knife, w/o any weapons. By your own skill and luck you keep from getting hurt, and manage to hobble the perp. Are you going to now go in for the kill? Break his neck? Take his knife and stab?

Don’t say “but he didn’t have lethal force”....BS, you don’t know that and edged weapons are extremely dangerous because the wounds don’t bind up easily.

You stated, as do most such proponents, that TO BEGIN WITH that it MUST be “shoot to kill” with a firearm. So why not “wrestle to kill”? Or for that matter stab to kill?

Really, I think it’s a bunch of bravado and big talk. There are MANY scenarios that come up, and heck, why do we constantly refrain “just HAVING a gun makes people stop”?

all these scenarios...reminds me of the old acronym...KISS ... when it comes to concealed carry these are two very important rules to a gun fight...
1.) ALWAYS shoot for center mass.
2.) FIRE until the threat is neutralized.
(neutralized includes them running away)

...and in none of my posts did I say shoot to kill.

hope that will assuage sensibilities. ;)

yep I remember an old spaghetti western where the good guy fired his “6 shooter” over 10 times without loading LOL

...can’t argue with anything you said except for the caveat...
“ I’d rather be judged by twelve than carried by six”

Like it has been said...

Two things that one should always have at hand.

A pistol and a parachute.

If the situation arises where you may EVER need one of them-and don’t have, chances are the opportunity will NOT present itself again.
