Trump signs executive order meant to protect electricity system from foreign interference

President Trump signed an executive order Friday barring U.S. purchases of certain foreign-produced power equipment, a move meant to reduce national security risks to the electricity system.

“It is imperative the bulk-power system be secured against exploitation and attacks by foreign threats,” Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette said in a statement. The order “will greatly diminish the ability of foreign adversaries to target our critical electric infrastructure.”

Examples of bulk-power system equipment include substations, control rooms, substation transformers, and generators that are necessary to operate the interconnected electricity grid and maintain reliable generation, according to the order.

The order prohibits any bulk-power system transactions in which a foreign country or national has an interest or that “poses an unacceptable risk to national security.” It also authorizes the secretary of energy to implement the order, including by identifying vendors that might pose a risk and developing strategies to identify and replace any now-prohibited equipment already in use.

Brouillette will also lead a new task force developed by the order to establish a coordinated federal policy on energy infrastructure procurement. That task force will review how national security risks are considered in energy security and cybersecurity policy, and it will consult with the electricity and natural gas subsector coordinating councils, according to the order.

“Solar panels can’t be hacked. Just sayin”

Solar energy has its place as a rooftop solution. I am adamantly opposed to solar farms that gobble up huge amounts of space and often fry any birds that fly over them.

If the panels are on a subsidized, solar-farm money pit marketed through our regional power companies, it's the distribution system that can be hacked, and probably would be.

As I assume you refer to the security of home-based rooftop collectors--obviously, I agree with that.

Israel was able to destroy Iran's centrifuges though the firmware contained in the motor control systems Iran purchased from Germany. This set Iran's nuclear program back 10 years (IIRC).

Just sayin’...

Acres and acres of farmland here in upstate are being lost to wind farms. Just plain stupid.

The verdict is still out as to how bad solar panels will be damaged from an EMP.

Yes, panels can’t be hacked but inverters can. I can see a hack where the inverter is pushed a firmware update from the grid/cloud monitoring service and that turns the inverter into a brick and dies. I wouldn’t put this past the ChiComs at all. Solution is NOT to allow grid/cloud monitoring of your inverter(s). Unfortunately all company’s warranties are based on their continual monitoring. You shut down the connection and they will not honor a warranty anymore.

This is good, but we need legislation.

Those huge transformers takes months to make and are made basically on demand. It’s one of the worries of and EMP hit.

MAGA 2020 - Never let a crisis go to waste.

Legislation would be a lot better than an EO. Maybe next term if we can get the house back, keep senate and Trump.

“This is good, but we need legislation.”

Agree. But, finally..and hopefully sincere, attention to be paid to protecting electric grids. However, doubt Dems will go along with any legislation favored by Trump.

yes, I’m paranoid but think attention also needed to electro magnetic pulse ....

Solar panels will be trashed in the event of an EMP of any significant strength. The barrier level in the circuit will be breached. The barrier level is made thinner and thinner by the mfg’s to increase efficiency and reduce costs.

More and more things want to talk to their warranty servicer via the internet. Privacy and hacking are a big deal and Congress needs to improve the protections from that type of data transfer. Samsung makes many things that spy on you. Even the cameras in their refrigerators can be remotely accessed.

What barrier are you refering to ?

I believe each panel has a reverse bias protection diode. That will be destroyed by an EMP. But if I go in and remove or replace those I should get some output — yes ?

Never could find any useful science on the web on this emp action on panels. Hav eyou any links you can share?

There is an insulation layer that acts as a barrier to a “short”(failure of the depletion zone) circuit in the panel between the n-type and p-type layers.

Oh and yes the diodes could easily get zapped.

No, there is not good public data on the subject. Almost like they don’t want to discuss it.
