The new class divide is the old class divide. No government employees have been laid off.
When it snows, government tells their non-essential employees to stay home.
Why not lay off these non-essential government employees?
Right you are. Government workers get paid. Private contractors are shut down and workers are laid off. That is the current class divide.
Here on the Central California coast the city of Monterey just laid off 40 employees. Without the tax revenue from the tourist trade the city is running out of money. Big financial draw is meeting the pension and healthcare obligations for retired city workers. CALPERS the state run government employee pension program was already underfunded and will soon be a trillion dollars in the red. Whose going to be stuck with that bill?
I thought I was a professional all these years but no, I’m just plain old working class....but at least I know I’m essential and not just a paper pusher....
Having been semi-retired from / by the tech industry at age 58, I took up being a teacher’s aide in public pre-school. I’ve been laid off.
However, the pay while laid off is HIGHER than my paycheck while I was working, because of the extra $600 per week passed by Congress.
I hear the same thing about bartenders, etc. Their Republican bar owner is going out of business, but they are making more staying home smoking pot (an essential business).
