Florida sheriff says he didn’t need to disclose fatally shooting drug dealer when he was 14

The Florida sheriff appointed by the governor after the 2018 Parkland high school massacre is defending himself over allegations that he should have disclosed he fatally shot another teenager when he was 14 in Philadelphia.

Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony told reporters over the weekend that he didn't see the need to disclose the 1993 killing to Gov. Ron DeSantis or on other applications during his law enforcement career because he was a juvenile and he was cleared because it was self-defense.

The shooting came to light Saturday in an article published by the Florida Bulldog website and further roiled the August Democratic primary race between Tony and the fired sheriff he replaced, Scott Israel.

From the snip below, the sheriff played the race card. Bad.

But the shooting was inside his house. So it seems legit. Had he been a 14-year-old out on a street somewhere, that would have been a different story.

——
“It was chaos. It was frightening. The most horrific thing I ever experienced,” Tony told the Miami Herald about the shooting. “For this to be used by a political opponent to turn me into a 14-year-old black kid with a gun, we’re on a dangerous precedent here.”

The shooting happened at the Tony family home in the Badlands neighborhood of Philadelphia, an area known for its violence and open air drug dealing.

Hell, I agree with the Sheriff. Even if it had been disclosed, it would have been a plus as it gave him a PERSONAL understanding of self-defense.

He was 14. Besides the facts, “...he was a juvenile and he was cleared because it was self-defense.”

I totally agree this should not be something against his record.

Wrong.
He was saying what his opponents would say about him, as in.
he was a typical black kid running the streets with a gun.

I guess we’ll have to disagree on this one. I don’t know much about this new sheriff, but I wish him well. The old one was a disaster and a disgrace.

But I looked at the article, and the links within. I found no mention of the sheriff’s opponent bringing up race. (If I’m wrong, please correct me in that.) It seems like the sheriff brought it up first.

So then, who played the race card? It looks like it was the sheriff. That wouldn’t prevent me from voting for him were I in his county. But it’s something he shouldn’t have done.

He said: “For this to be used by a political opponent to turn me into a 14-year-old black kid with a gun,”
You’re right, his opponent didn”t say it, but I have no doubt he knows Scott Israel will play this card.

There was a 14 year old kid shot up the street from the
Flash Mansion, and I learned about it on FR. The poster and some of the commenters figured he was a street thug. He wasn’t. He was a football player who had just gotten accepted to a competitive Catholic school. His father had brought him up from Peewee football, and was the team videographer and was a constant positive presence in the kid’s life. I ended up donating $100 to the kid’s funeral.

The kid got shot by a 25 year old thug from Hayward while the kid was walking to the candy store.

So yes, people will jump to the conclusion that a 14 year old black kid who shoots someone, or gets shot, is a street thug.

Even here.
