Gonna be interesting to see who gets the first FDA approved vaccine with the daily reports of so many labs working on this. Who gets the patent? If public company, may be a stock opportunity, as if I'll ever get back in that cluster.

I wonder if the winning vaccine will work on influenza which mutates, and what if COVID mutates? Also, wonder if it will work on the common cold, which has been reported to be a strain of the corona virus.

This can be ruled as “fake news” from the very headline. Not such thing as a “vaccine” that kills anything. Vaccines are preventatives - giving a modified or killed “dose” of whatever virus you are trying to immunize against to a healthy person so that their immune system can “learn” it and then fight it if/when exposed.

Scientists gave mice the jab

Ugh, jabbing mice sounds so violent. I'd rather be humane and give mice a tiny shot with a tiny needle.

Preliminary results from lab tests showed the antibodies created in test mice were able to stop human cells being infected with the coronavirus.

Neutralizing antibodies--sounds promising.

The Italian team compared a single dose of five different vaccine candidates on mice at Spallanzani Hospital in Rome. All are DNA based vaccines; the method involved injecting a tiny amount of cloned genetic code from the virus into the body.

What this means is that instead of using a viral protein or protein mixture or deactivated/weakened viruses in the vaccine, they have made a sort of instruction cartridge that tells cells in the body to make viral proteins. As far as I can determine, there is no DNA vaccine that is FDA approved for human use. There are certain hurdles in the approval process, one of the main being the question of how many people are willing to have a piece of viral DNA--the instruction code--injected into their bodies.

I think I would take a different approach. I'd use the DNA to force cells in culture to make the viral proteins, then purify the proteins to use as a vaccine. The approval process for a protein based vaccine is a lot more straightforward than the process for a DNA vaccine.
