I wouldn’t use that number. The problem with COVID-19 is that there are many cases where people do not feel symptoms so they pass it on to others. And even if they do develop symptoms, how many of them are getting tested? So the virus appears to be deadlier than it is. 7% of confirmed cases, we are not getting the full picture, especially here in USA.
I have already explained MANY times why any number but the actual case number is highly questionable.
For one thing, every claim that many people have already had Covid-19 completely ignores the biology of disease transmission. In order for Covid-19 to have infected so many people in such a short time, it would have to be the most contagious virus known. For comparison, the most contagious virus known is measles. In a non-immune population, each person who gets measles infects 15-18 others because they shed aerosolized virus that remains in the air for up to 2 hours. Coronaviruses do not spread that way. They spread through droplets that are expelled by coughs and sneezes, and (I suppose) talking. Those droplets fall to the ground within a radius of 6 feet of the ill person. Because of the way it spreads, Covid-19 is, in fact, only about as contagious as any other cold. All this is an explanation of why the claims that Covid-19 has been spreading like wildfire are not based on biological principles.
The antibody tests are not very reliable. The reason for this is rooted in the way that antibodies recognize pathogens. Coronaviruses all have structural similarities. The antibodies recognize structure, and don’t distinguish well between different antigens that have similar structure. The antibody assays that supposedly show past Covid-19 infection are most likely showing coronavirus infection, since this is cold season and many colds are caused by coronaviruses.
The direct testing of samples for viral RNA is probably one of the most reliable measures of whether someone is infected by Covid-19. This is because RNA is more specific than protein. The number of people tested for the presence of Covid-19 is in large excess to the number of people who test positive, meaning that the “net” is cast wide enough to catch cases, and the chance of missing any is low. Since this is the method used to determine cases, and therefore is feeding into the case counts, this is the number I use for all of my calculations.
