The new powerful documentary Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words set to premier Monday on PBS traces the nations longest-serving Supreme Court justices journey from his childhood in segregated Georgia to the pinnacle of power in Washington, D.C.
And there are definitely some unlikely turns along the way in Thomas transformation from a 1960s leftist radical to a supporter of conservative icon Ronald Reagan.
Created Equal, written, produced and directed by veteran documentary filmmaker Michael Pack, features primarily Thomas telling his own story on camera, with Virginia Thomas, his wife of over 30 years, making intermittent appearances throughout.
The two were in fact the only people Pack interviewed for purposes of being in the film, though many others like Thomas most influential political mentor, former Sen. John Danforth of Missouri do play into the telling via archival footage.
The film is visually satisfying, with location shots in some of the beautiful landscapes and waterways of Thomas youth in and around Savannah, Georgia, as well as places in New England where he attended college and graduate school: the College of the Holy Cross and Yale Law School.

Why do I get the impression that if he had been a leftist they would’ve touted his black panther bonafides to show he’s a “real” black man.
Why wait for Google/YouTube? It should be on your local PBS station tomorrow evening. (or later this week)
Well, his roots are deeper than the last white house occupant. And he is WAY smarter than the previous WHO.
Its a TERRIFIC movie
Not sure if I have access to ‘pbs’. May have to look.
Concur. We saw it in a theater earlier this year (pre-shut down) and really enjoyed seeing and hearing one of our greatest Americans. It would not be PBS’s normal fare.
Similar experience as David Horowitz-—”Radical Son” book.
If you don’t get it over the air, you should be able to stream it with the PBS app at some point tomorrow.

Thanks.
Great flick. Mrs. jimfree and I saw this a few months back at a Georgetown theater.
Will be watching. Shared this article on FB.
Some websites associate the BPs with "socialism" but that's, imo, an oversimplification of their views. You can see a very interesting interview of Huey P. Newton on Firing Line with William F. Buckley Jr.
another excellent book
unfortunately our leftard library pulled Radical Son and all of his later books
they lost me then
Saw it in the theater. Excellent documentary, I highly reccommend.
Watching now. Pretty damn good for PBS.
I agree. Watching this now. I freakin’ LOVE this documentary. Masterpiece. The GOP should book time and pay to broadcast this film over and over again on commercial networks this fall. The film shows everything that is at stake with the 2020 election... and it also shows what a scumbag Joe Biden was. I say WAS because watching 1991 Biden is a reminder of what a pathetic shell now remains of the cocky, fast-talking 49-year-old a-hole that ran the Thomas hearings.
If you haven’t read his auto-biography yet, then I highly recommend “My Grandfather’s Son.” Thomas is a national masterpiece, not only as a justice of the SCOTUS, but as a human being.
