Expansion of travel restrictions at Mexican border
Border Report ^ | 19 May 2020 | Julian Resendiz

Posted on 05/19/2020 6:53:52 PM PDT by BeauBo

Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf said (today, 19 May, that) the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were extending Title 42 public health restrictions at the Canadian and Mexican borders until he determines the danger from COVID-19 has ceased...

The restrictions pretty much limits admission into the United States to American citizens and legal permanent residents and exclude people from countries were the coronavirus remains active.

Unlike the previous orders, which lasted a month, the latest extension doesn’t have an expiration date.

“(It) shall remain in effect until … the danger of further introduction of COVID-19 into the United States from covered aliens has ceased to be a serious danger to the public health.”

‘Bout time we too played the game of “never let a crisis go to waste.”

It should really say “Extension” of restrictions, rather than “Expansion” - it is mainly about the timeline, even though it does plug a few gaps from the earlier order.

Keep them both closed to non commercial traffic permanently! I love not having to dodge Canadian cars anymore. (I wish we could keep the trucks out too...)

The restrictions pretty much limits admission into the United States to American citizens.

No it does't, there is no law that excludes a US citizen from returning to this country. I know because I was a US Border Patrol Agent for 25 years.

If I apprehended a US Citizen crossing the Rio Grande there is no law I could charge them with. 8 USC 1325 'Illegal Entry' only applies to aliens.

If I showed up at a port of entry whether I had in my possession of a valid passport or not and they denied me entry I would tell them F-you I am not going back arrest me.

They can't because there is no law that says they can and they know it. Sure they will detain you for a few hours to verify your claim but they will have to let you go.

I have seen it happen several times, A US citizen in Juarez or TJ gets jacked and heads back to the border with no ID.

The only thing they can do is to verify your story and let you go. If they sent you back they would have violated the law and face grave liability if something bad happened to you.

How does one get an expansion of restrictions?

Since you do have a background in the area, I have a question:

If I show up at a port of entry, claim to be American, but without federal identification, would it not be possible for you to electronically pull up my passport (assuming I do have one), after I give you my name and birth date. I would think, for a fairly common name you might get a dozen or so hits, but a quick scan of pictures should identify me.

Of course if I don’t have a passport, then life is more complicated for you.

“The restrictions pretty much limits admission into the United States to American citizens.”

I think they meant admissions limited to ONLY American citizens.

That source (Border Report) seems to be close to the action on the border, wit bi-lingual/bi-cultural reporters. I suspect they are much better in Spanish than I am - but the English editors don’t seem to have been educated at Oxford.

Almost every article has some turn of phrase that can be misleading - in an accidental sort of way, rather than the deliberately artful kind of way mainstream media purposefully attempts to mislead.

Freeper Paladin2 had some fun with the headline’s “Expansion of restrictions”.

CBP Officers are trained to determine nationality without the use of documents or records.

They use a series of questions only a US citizen would know. Even Canadians get tripped up its a common occurrence along the northern border.
