Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine offer no clinical benefit for people with COVID-19 and might cause serious heart-related side effects, according to a study published Friday in The Lancet.
People with severe illness caused by the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, treated with either drug -- either alone or with an antiviral medication -- were up to twice as likely to die than those in the control group, which received standard, supportive care, the researchers found.
Those who died did so either as a result of COVID-19 or from side effects from treatment, the authors said.
"This is the first large-scale study to find statistically robust evidence that treatment with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine does not benefit patients with COVID-19," co-author Dr. Mandeep R. Mehra, executive director of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Advanced Heart Disease in Boston noted in a press release.
"Our findings suggest [these drugs] may be associated with an increased risk of serious heart problems and increased risk of death," she said.
Both drugs, used to treat malaria, have been touted by President Donald Trump and others, including billionaire Elon Musk, as a potential treatment for COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, or to prevent infection. Their praise has come despite a lack of scientific evidence.

except when you have a heart already sick from critical illness or viral cardiomyopathy. Even you should know when the EF is less than 35% there is an enhanced risk of malignant and fatal arrhythmias. The last couple patients i gave hydroxychloroquine to before they negative studies came out had to have it stopped due to Qtc prolongation. Despite what many wish this is not the drug to use in seriously ill patients with Covid
Chloroquine is more likely to cause dangerous side effects than hydroxychloroquine. You need to look at them separately.
And as many will point out, HCQ doesn’t seem to do much when given late in the disease process.
Sure. let’s forget the major study published in a peer reviewed journal and go with the you tube videos of one family doc in New York.
The point of this study was to be used as propaganda by the fake news outlets to scare the public away from a medicine that many, many doctors are giving to their patients with excellent results.
The public is naive, they aren’t in the mindset of realizing how many “experts” there are out there whose motive it is to deceive. The public needs to get in that mindset, of assuming that everything the “experts” tell us might actually be a lie. All the time.

Leave the medicine to those who spent years studying it and years more practicing it and researching it? That’s just crazy talk!

Early on isn’t happening in most states.
In my state you have to be sick enough to be hospitalized to get it. By then it’s way too late.
Which is why we don’t wait until the patient is dying to administer the drug regimen that has been proven effective when administered earlier.

I only treat people ill enough to be hospitalized so I don’t have. dog in that hunt but I am unaware anything g has been proven about less ill patients

Well, for both sides this is about President Trump, not any drug.
Those on the left *HAVE* to believe that it doesn’t work, so the narrative that Trump is an incompetent snake oil salesman who is panicking because he screwed up in his initial response is maintained. So anyone saying it works HAS to be wrong and is merely blindly loyal to President Trump.
Those on the right HAVE to believe that if President Trump says it works, it works, and ANY study, data, or opinions to the contrary are part of the plot to destroy American and defeat the President’s agenda, so anyone saying it doesn’t work *has* to be wrong, and is spewing Fake News.
