I am guessing their overall health has taken a severe downturn.

It almost sounds like the efforts to prevent forestry management in the Western US to “save the critters” and prevent the release of “CO2” that results in mega-fires where the critters are burned alive and most of the carbon is released in days and the ground is sterilized for many years afterwards.
