WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Supreme Court on Friday rejected an emergency appeal by a California church that challenged state limits on attendance at worship services that have been imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Over the dissent of the four more conservative justices, Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court's four liberals in turning away a request from the South Bay United Pentecostal Church in Chula Vista, California, in the San Diego area.

A gentle reminder: Although Reagan gave us Scalia and Rehnquist, he also gave us O’Connor and Kennedy. G H W Bush gave us Souter, but he also gave us Thomas. G W Bush gave us Roberts, but he also gave us Alito. All three presidents were 50/50 on their decisions. Perhaps some have forgotten how much hatred was directed at GWB’s candidates. But I think some might recall that only a blank slate such as Roberts stood a chance of getting through the entire process.

Roberts is not consistent. Turned out to be a bad choice. Too late now. We are stuck with him until he dies.

We need term limitations on Supreme Court justices. Can’t afford to have leftists on their for life.

“That effort was when it finally dawned on me that Bush was a mental lightweight.”

Bush wasn’t just a lightweight, he was entirely dishonest. While claiming he was in favor of a federal marriage amendment, he did this:

Bush was a Lyndon Johnson liberal.

Some of us here in Texas recognized it when Bush was Guv.

Ok so what’s the problem here? If rioters can casually ignore State officials and commit numerous acts of violence, and burn down businesses and police stations, worshipers can ignore orders from State officials regarding where and when they can worship. Hint to Governors: Save your energy. Leave peaceful religious people alone and concentrate on violent lawbreakers.

Actually, as I remember, Roberts was well-known not to be an originalist of the Scalia / Thomas kind. For example, a self-proclaimed liberal on another Internet forum was relieved when he heard that Roberts had been nominated. Roberts was said to be a judicial minimalist which was supposed to mean that he doesn’t like sweeping decisions. It didn’t say much about his fidelity to the Constitution. Apparently, it was good enough for the GOP Establishment.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;....

Well, I guess the 1st Amendment is out the window! Time to over-exercise the 2nd!

Can we impeach Roberts?

"We" lost 40 seats in the House in 2018. "We" are about to lose the Senate.

So, no, I don't think we will be impeaching Roberts any time soon.

Yes, I noticed all of those things. The Bushes are liberal wolves in conservative sheep clothing.

I was beyond thrilled when Jeb! belly flopped quickly in the primary season.

(And plus, we got Melania instead of the Columbo midget.)

Just don't call it a worship service; call it a "protest." As we're seeing tonight, they can't disperse you then.

If you show up and pray at church the media will call us "rioters". End Times.

The 'black community' doesn't follow the law - they burn cities down and the cops sit on their hands.

Why the hell should we follow the law? No one else does...

I pay high taxes so the police can babysit the black community?

Then when WE need the cops to stop our cities from burning they play stupid and roll over for the thugs?

Gimme a break.

Ninety percent of most police budgets are allocated to 'black community' concerns.

So I pay all this damn money and when the mob starts burning down cities the cops ARE NOT THERE TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS WHO PAY THEIR DAMN SALARIES.

What the hell am I paying for? Nothing. Let the black community protect themselves. I'm sick of paying for nothing. If my city burns, my home is attacked, the stores I shop at are destroyed, the damn 'cops' will be afraid to arrest the thugs because they're more afraid of being called 'racist'? They let my city burn because they're afraid to arrest thugs? I'm NOT paying for that crap.

Disband the cops...

Decent people already have home security systems because the cops don't protect us. We pay for court systems that exists to be soft on criminals. And now the effing system we pay for allows our cities to burn?

NO MORE COPS. TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY.

“I pay high taxes so the police can babysit the black community?’

If y’all missed Tucker last night, the first segment of the show — a monologues — had to do with this. It’s probably the best monologues I’ve ever heard of his.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Supreme Court on Friday rejected an emergency appeal by a California church that challenged state limits on attendance at worship services that have been imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Over the dissent of the four more conservative justices, Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s four liberals in turning away a request from the South Bay United Pentecostal Church in Chula Vista, California, in the San Diego area.

The church argued that limits on how many people can attend their services violate constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and had been seeking an order in time for services on Sunday. The church said it has crowds of 200 to 300 people for its services.

Roberts wrote in brief opinion that the restriction allowing churches to reopen at 25% of their capacity, with no more than 100 worshipers at a time, “appear consistent” with the First Amendment. Roberts said similar or more severe limits apply to concerts, movies and sporting events “where large groups of people gather in close proximity for extended periods of time.”

How is “congress shall make no law” consistent with the First Amendment as it applies to freaking baseball games?

It will take a Trump win and a republican senate in 2021 to make Roberts irrelevant.

Hope that happens. We got to make that Winning happen.

We have 22 republican seats on the line. Demons only have 12.

I’m not sure about Tillis (NC) or Gardner (CO) or Collins (ME)

The only pickups among the Demons I see are Jones (AL) and maybe Smith (MN)

It is going to be scary close. We have to have the Senate. I think our chances of retaking the House are lot better.

Trump needs a wave election and will probably get it. That’s our best hope.

“won’t matter as soon as Ruth Bader Ginsberg dies”

If she croaks before November, we’ll never know it. She’ll be on a slab o’ ice until Election Day, and they’ll take their chances of the RAT winning before announcing her demise.

Trump needs to issue an order that no more than 100 looters and rioters may assemble to peacefully protest in any one place at any one time and cite Roberts opinion as authority.
